R61 with XP has mouse cursor issues for fine adjustment

I use an R61 at work, with XP installed. It has a nipple mouse, trackpad and USB connected mouse; I use the USB mouse in preference.

When trying to grab object handles, resize boxes, click the "table select" box in Word and things like that, I find that the mouse cursor sort of jumps around the item, making it very difficult to use in Visio and other drawing programs.

This behaviour is repeated for all mouse control options.

Does anyone have any idea which program, driver or setting might be causing this?

Are you saying that this jumping behavior is present when using the trackpoint as well as the USB mouse? There is a trackpoint mouse sensitivity adjustment in control panel, mouse, ultranav tab.
