4GB Ram on T60 with Debian (that see only 3GB)

#1 Post by pictux » Thu Mar 05, 2009 3:16 pm

Hi all.
In my T60 i've installed long time ago 4gb ram.
Of course, my Debian see only 3GB.

I read this post:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=49703
many times, but hope is still alive:
Is there a solution, like kernel recompile with High memory support at 64Gb, to use all my physical ram?

Thanks!
Regards

Put shortly, NO. It is a hardware limitation that cannot by bypassed by any software.
IBM Lenovo Z61p | 15.4'' WUXGA | Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2x 2.16GHz | 4 GB Kingston HyperX | Hitachi 7K500 500 GB + WD 1TB (USB) | ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 | ThinkPad Atheros a/b/g | Analog Devices AD1981HD | Win 7 x86 + ArchLinux 2009.08 x64 (number crunching)

The chipset of the T60 limits to 3 G of RAM. If you need to get 4 or 8 G of RAM, you have to upgrade to T61.

I can understand you very well, in the beginning we were all hoping just the same, but after a while one gets used to the idea and gives up :)

Hello.

Are you currently running the "bigmem" Debian kernel? Hopefully this post should shed some light on the topic.

I've already tried that, without success... :-(
Isn't it an HW limit?

Yes, it's an HW limitation, due to:
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS
The 945 chipset can adress 4GB maximum. 4GB - IO-Space - gfx = 3GB
usable RAM.
as descibed here:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category: ... cellaneous
and discussed also here:
http://www.nabble.com/Only-3-out-of-4-G ... 54199.html

So, my new question is:
it's possible to replace this component?
Or i need to change the motherboard?
Or simply change laptop :-D?

Thanks!

You can change the mobo if you find a newer one that would fit. Of course, the easiest solution would be to buy something based on Santa-Rosa or later.
