R40e hard drive upgrade

#1 Post by jimmo-T60R40e » Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:20 pm

Will a 120gb like this below work on my laptop? It is a 2684NU2 with 1gig mem (added), and dvd/cd drive (added).

"Western Digital Scorpio WD1200BEVE 120GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache ATA-6 Notebook Hard Drive - OEM "

I know the old interface is ATA-1 that goes to 137gig. Is the ATA-6 drive ok to use? I bought the 250gb scorpio WD drive and could not get that to work. Someone said it has to be less than 137gig on this model of thinkpad. I am going to use the 250gig in an USB enclosure off my USB pc card and a Y cable for extra power as this drive needs.

Another question, if I may. My unit does not have an internal wireless antenna for the PCI slot, so I am using a pc card for that. Can I use that pci slot for something else? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks if advance, jimmo

Apparently there is a BIOS limit on the R40e of 137GB, but with that said many times booting larger drives can be accomplished with DDO programs. I don't see any issues with using a WD 120GB drive. In answer to your other question, I do not know of any other use for the internal mPCI slot, there may be one, but I don't know it.

Thanks for your advice. I will buy and try a 120gb Wd, I think the discussions of upgrading the HDD firmware is a little over my head, and I do not know what DDO programs are. I guess disk drive operation programs.

But, I tried the WD setup CD that came with another 3.5" internal drive, and it copied my original drive to the 250gb (this came with no cd), but had errors. I may have screwed the 250 up some how with making, formatting, and adding and deleting partitions so many times. I have tried Ghost from Norton System Works 2003, Partition Magic 8, Drive Image Pro 3.0, and Apricorn's EZgig II DriveWire adapter and software, with no luck. I will post if it does not work.
