Difference between T40 and T42 motherboards?

#1 Post by Fnurga » Sun Mar 08, 2009 5:26 pm

Hi,

Is there any difference at all between those cards physically?
Or is it possible to just flash the bios and get a T42 board from a T40?

Regards

Actually, the BIOS is the same for both machines. The boards are physically the same but many of the parts are different. Some differences include different security, faster memory bus, active (disk) protection system.

All the T40/1/2 series can use the same motherboard, but if you use a T40 board your RAM will run slower, at PC2100 speeds.

It's possible, because that would work, but T42's from the factory have PC2700 installed.

T41 and T42 can both use PC2700 RAM, but if they have PC2100, it will run at PC2100 speeds. T40 can run with PC2700 Ram but is limited to PC2100 speeds. On T40. the optional security chip is on the underside on a daughter-board that is married to the motherboard. (cannot be replaced) On the T41 and T42, they are in a similar location, but on the motherboard itself. The security on the T41 and T42 support passphrase encryption.

I forgot, one more thing.

How about the CPU. Is there any interchangeability between the T4x?

Same deal, all interchangeable between T4X models until you get up to the T43, then the front side bus speed is different.
