very annoying beep (not keyboard)

#1 Post by ivan » Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:30 pm

hi everyone,

love my x40, but i hear every now and then an annoying beep that:

- is sort of a high pitched, medium volume, internal beep;
- seems to come from the left, maybe HDD, but not sure
- occurs at random times, with varying frequencies, somedays not at all; like hiccups...
- its not usual HDD clicks; definitely a "beep" (but maybe followed by a click)
- its not relatd to keyboard use (from hitting certain keys combinations at same time phenomena)

does anyone know what this is? and how to solve it? this is driving me crazy ... please help!

many thanks to all!

Hi,

is it a series of four quick beeps ? Like "bzik bzik bzik bzik" high pitched medium volume and then quite ?

If yes, then my x40 do the same and I don't know what the hell is it :?

But I used to this noise.I think it is normal for x40.

Ship it back to some IBM service if it is annoying. I have the similar problem and I have no idea what the hell it could be because HDD nor fan. Maybe some capacitators on the motherboard. I have heard some MB do this.

From the description it sounds like the HDD. There's supposed to be a firmware update coming out soon for the drives in X40, so you can wait like a week or two and try the update.

Or just call the help center. If it's a known problem they might give you a free HDD.

Sure,
that beep is quite common.
It is mostly the power management that scans the devices.
Since I don't have any X-series, but know those beeps on the T-series, maybe I can help.

Just Turn OFF the power save Enable button on the USB controller.
You find it in the device manager, properties.

Potentially the same with the infrared power save.
Usually the beeps are gone after that.
