Hard drive question

#1 Post by Tõnis » Wed Mar 11, 2009 3:25 am

I read that it's not good to store a computer in close proximity to a magnet. What about near steel? Will storing a Thinkpad in a steel toolbox harm it in any way? (Assume that extremes in temperature are not a factor.) TIA for your replies.

It will be perfectly safe to store a TP (or its HD) in a Safe or metal container.
For best results, put the HD in an anti-static bag and add some silica-gel to it, to absorb any moisture.

A magnet got to be pretty powerful to wipe a disk. The ordinary household magnets pose no danger.
Just keep PCs etc. away from loudspeaker enclosures.

... Not forgetting that TV sets have loudspeakers in them.

Thank you both for your replies. There are times when I'm fine leaving my Thinkpad in the plastic cooler that's in the back of my van. However, there are other times (and places) where I would rather secure it in the locked steel tool chest. Though I haven't stored it there yet, it's good to know that it's okay to do that. (Of course, I'm always mindful of the expected in-vehicle temperature ...)
