S10 CPU Question

#1 Post by Temetka » Fri Mar 13, 2009 1:19 am

A friend of mine just picked up an S10 from Fry's.

Black unit, 1GB, 160HD.

In XP Home the processor shows as having either 2 cores or 1 core with hyperthreading.

Is the S10 dual core?

If so I will be selling my T60 ASAP to get one.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, Lenovo S10 uses a single-core Intel Atom cpu that is capable of hyperthreading.

Next stupid, easily googl-ed but I am too lazy question.

Is it 32 or 64 bit?

Finally what is stopping the system from using a 4GB SODIMM?

It´s only 32-bit-capable -> http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupID=36331

BTW, regarding hyperthreading N270 supports max 2 threads.

AFAIK, Lenovo has soldered 512 MB RAM to the mobo leaving one memory slot free... Some folks claim it can take up to 2 GB additionally, but that´s because 4 GB modules are so expensive or didn´t exist until a few months ago. In fact, according to the data sheet of Intel Atom N270 this cpu us capable of Data Execution Prevention (DEP), which would actually suggest that it´s capable of PAE (physical address extension). Further googling seems to confirm the fact that the cpu supports PAE. So, if Lenovo hasn´t crippled down the chipset, this baby should be able to utilize up to 128 GB of RAM with the proper OS (provided someone would produce so big modules) :twisted: Regarding OS, I´m not aware of anyone having successfully utilized PAE under XP, hence the best OS choice for S10 with "extended" RAM would be Server 2003. It´s anyways much better optimized than XP.

Cheers,

Marin
