Replacing wifi in T41
Replacing wifi in T41
I've been using intel 2100 3b minipc card but have some problems with wpa-psk and what is worse it does not work with wpa2. Hance , I decided to find one that supportes nad work fine with wpa2. Now i want you to help me work out my problem. Is it possible to put intel 2200 from another model of thinkpad like r51 for instance? Wiil it work fine with my t41? My friend has dell with intell 2200 but the bios says 'unrecognized card'. But what if it was taken out of another thinkpad?
Re: Replacing wifi in T41
The R51 and T41/42 are almost identical internally. An Intel 2200 card from an R51 would work just fine in a T41.
Re: Replacing wifi in T41
Is it worth it to replace a Dell 1370 card with the Intel 2200 abg wireless card? Is there any difference other than the chipset? One is Broadcom and the other is Intel?
Re: Replacing wifi in T41
I would not replace one functioning b/g wifi card with another unless there was a compelling reason to do so, .e.g errors on boot or one being operationally deficient in some way, like poor range. Otherwise there is no reason to change the card.
Re: Replacing wifi in T41
It works but the Broadcom-based Dell branded 1370 card is giving me problems when I use Linux. The support is improved but still lousy, imho. I plugged in a Cisco Orinoco card (Proxim) and I could connect via wireless with LiveCDs! I believe the Intel 2100 and 2200 cards have built-in support so I thought I would have a better experience using them and they're made for the Thinkpads anyway.Harryc wrote:I would not replace one functioning b/g wifi card with another unless there was a compelling reason to do so, .e.g errors on boot or one being operationally deficient in some way, like poor range. Well, if the Dell branded 1370 card is giving you problems in Linux, then that would be an operational deficiency. I have used Intel 2200b/g cards in Linux for years and they work out of the box.

That's why I am considering one.Harryc wrote:Well, if the Dell branded 1370 card is giving you problems in Linux, then that would be an operational deficiency. I have used Intel 2200b/g cards in Linux for years and they work out of the box.
Some people in the forum recommend Atheros-based wifi card, too, though.
I am trying to confirm whether they would 'fit' in my Thinkpad T41. I don't know if I have the antenna compatibility for a/b/g cards?
I checked my original configuration (when the Thinkpad was originally configured/bought ?) and it supposedly had a 2100b wifi card.
Does that make any difference with the antenna? I am hoping no.
Re: Replacing wifi in T41
If the original config had wireless, you already have the antennas unless someone replaced the LCD and didn't include them as originally installed. Given the choice of Atheros or Intel of that vintage...I'd probably go with Atheros if the cost were the same. If I got the Intel card for free, I would try it first to see how it works. Your original post made it sound like you have a 2200b/g card at your disposal.
