R60e with Broken Hinge and LCD Cover

#1 Post by R60e » Sun Mar 15, 2009 3:18 am

On my Lenovo R60e, the LCD cover and the right hinge separated from each other from the screws and I brought the unit to an authorized service centre in Canada to repair. They changed out the hinge since it was cracked but not the LCD cover (top case) and did not put any screws on the left side to hold the hinge together (only found this out when I was disassembling the laptop with my next problem). Double sided taped was used to hold the right side together.

Step forward 2 months and the hinge snaps at the exact same place since the LCD cover was never attached after the last repair. Service centre says they can't order another hinge again and can't order the LCD cover kit.

Unit still has 1.25 years of warranty left through Lenovo. Since both of these are non-CRU parts, I think changing them out by myself will void my warranty. Has anyone here called Lenovo in Canada and tried to get non-CRU parts to fix themselves under warranty (I need 13N7192 and 42W2695)? I think if I tell them that I need these part numbers, they will know that I took the unit apart already. Will Lenovo send me these parts if I just have standard 3 year depot warranty or will I have needed accidental protection (I'm leaning on the second one even though the laptop was not dropped)? Or should I just try to order these two parts and fix the repair myself?

First post here, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks :)

For $70 USD plus shipping you can get the parts from Lenovo, possibly cheaper if sourced from EBay. So, it's a matter of four simple decisions in my mind. First is, do you want the repair done right? If yes, do it yourself. Second is do you want to stand by principle and make Lenovo fix it right?. Third is can you be without the laptop for a few days? Finally, is $70 plus dollars no big deal to you or is that a large amount of money?

Good luck.

Note, the above is based on Lenovo US parts pricing.
