ThinkPad z60t laptop "fan error"
ThinkPad z60t laptop "fan error"
Yesterday my 2 year old laptop began displaying a "fan error" message on boot-up prior to Windows starting. This was after I blew into the heating exhaust to clear dust out. After three beeps, the system completely shuts off. I was able to by-pass this message and get Windows to load after pressing the "ESC" key during the error message. Prior to yesterday, my laptop would randomly shut off after extensive use - leading me to believe that the fan had overheated. In addition, after about 30 minutes of use - the laptop will stop responding or begin acting very slow. The fan does not turn on at all. Another interesting note, my mouse is acting up and is sometimes unresponsive unless I minimize then re-maxamize the program I am attempting to use. In addition, the cursor will "creep" across the screen towards the left sometimes as well. Does this sound like a fan/heating issue or a motherboard issue? Also, what exactly would I need to replace? As a college student, I cannot really afford to have some expensive repair done - but if I knew the proper part, I could order and install it myself. Thanks for your help. If you need additional details, please let me know.

Sounds like you need to replace the fan assembly (or, if you're lucky, you might find you blew junk into the assembly with the canned air, and can clean it out).
I apologize to our experts here, who probably have this procedure explained in a thread somewhere I haven't seen. But this site, which I had already bookmarked, has useful pictures and reassurances it might be as hard as you'd think:
