X22 Question

#1 Post by Ronny Floyd » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:18 am

Hi Gang !

I recently had a 40gig, 5400rpm hard drive installed on my little X22 and it is very loud.
It is making a clicking sound when under stress.

The hard drive on my 600E is totally silent and I am wondering why the X22 drive is so much louder ????

Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
Ronny

It took me a while to find the time to find out what kind of HDD is in the X22. It is a Toshiba # MK4019GAXB, and I seriously doubt that it is new.

Thanks,
Ronny

By my experience, Toshiba drives are worst than Hitachi and Fujitsu. Above all, I won't go for a used drive at all.

So what would be the best hdd to put into an x22 ?

I would like it to be as quiet as possible. Should I be looking at 5400 or 7200 rpm ?

Any recommendations ?

Thanks,
Ronny

The 160GB WD1600BEVE are currently available in retail for $50-$60. You can sometimes find new old stock 100GB Fujitsu (MHV2100AH) and Hitachi (HTS541210*) for $50-$60. 7200RPM drives are very hard to find new.

Sorry to interrupt but I am very interested in this thread. I was contemplating upgrading my hard drive. I have a 40 GB drive but I thought I might buy the same drive: 160GB WD1600BEVE

Does this work well in T41 Thinkpads? I read here (?) that there might be some extra noise or clicking? I found a 160GB WD1600BEVE locally that I can buy and might if there's no major issues.

I thought upgrading to 2GB RAM might help optimize the notebook, too.

Good ideas?

Thanks and carry on....

Actually this WD drive is very quiet, better than most other drives.

It has to do with the case construction. the x22s case is basically an acoustic horn for the Hard drive. Remove the keyboard and see how its laid out. The top of the drive, which emits the most noise has a airspace gap beneath the keyboard that connects to a larger airspace over the mother board.

The only remedy I can think off is to put small pieces of thin rubber tape on the drive top to dampen vibration. Don't cover the hole that says "Do Not Cover!"
