Important question about the SSD drive aligment for X301

#1 Post by ComputerMinder » Tue Mar 17, 2009 7:34 pm

My X301 came with 128gb SSD but I formatted it and re-installed a clean Vista installation.

I have read on many places on the net that proper drive aligment under XP can provide marvelous speed improvments under XP (up to 50%!). But I also read that in Vista although it is automatically aligned, that you can achieve even better results but properly aligning your drive to match the SSD controller.

This is a very advanced question but does anyone know what would be the perfect aligment for the Samsung 128Gb SSD that I have in the X301 (MMCQE28G8MUP-0VA) I reinstalled Vista so I may have lost special tweaking that were factory made, but even if not, it could be that it comes out of the factory with a general vista setup and I assume that a percise alignment may improve performance further.

Partition alignment is only for specific chronic SSD drives from OCZ. You do not need to do partition allignment with a Samsung SSD (which is what your laptop comes with). Furthermore, you'll be pleasantly surprised that Vista does all automatic partition alignment for you. You are only required to do it manually if you are installing XP.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Avalon. That is very useful info indeed!

I have two machines (actually 3 if you count my old X61s) X301 with Samsung 128gb SSD and X200s with OCZ Vertex 120gb SSD. I assume all SSD need special alignment because of the Vertex one in my X200s. Seems like the Samsung that came with the X301 is more hassle free.
