Can a ST9320421AS replace a ST910021AS ?

#1 Post by Parisk » Wed Mar 18, 2009 11:10 pm

I have a two-year-old T61 with a 100 Gb ST910021AS and I have < 5 Gb left :-( I wouldn't mind one of the newer 320 Gb ST9320421AS, but since the old one is rated at 1 Gb/sec and the newer Seagates are rated at 3 Gb/sec, I am wondering if I am going to have compatibility issues. I don't mind if the transfer with the new drive is at the older 1.5 Gb/sec level, as long as I don't end up with other problems.

If the above drive is not compatible, is there a list of other, compatible drives in the 320 Gb capacity, somewhere?

Thanks

A 7200.3 ST9320421AS will work fine, and will be faster than your 7200.1 ST910021AS

BTW, there is no single mechanical drive that can deliver a 3Gbps data rate for longer than it takes to empty its onboard controller cache, or even full utilise a 1.5Gbps data rate for sustained data transfer.

Cheers,
