T42p UXGA into an R51

#1 Post by jargoone » Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:36 am

Hi all-

I'm familiar with the T4 and X4 series, but am completely new to the R series.

I have an R51 with a bad backlight. I am going to get a lid/UXGA assembly from a T42p. Can someone tell me what will be involved in the swap? I guess I'd be too fortunate for the lid to go right on. I can do the panel swap, but am not looking forward to it.

Tried to search, and there are way too many hits to wade through.

TIA! :D

You will not be able to swap the entire lid.

Panel, cable and inverter will need to be transplanted from the T4x lid into your R5x lid.

Good luck.

Thanks for the clear and concise answer. I'm used to blazing right through repairs like this, but I'll take my time and follow the manuals for this one.

Follow on questions. The SXGA+ panel in the R51 was damaged in shipping. I'll know more once I disassemble it, but I'm guessing the likely victim is the CCFL. Is that a safe guess? If so, is it difficult to replace? Does the value of the panel make it worthwhile to do so?

Do you see any light at all on the damaged LCD?
When on, look at it from all sides, if you see only the vaguest of pictures, or a red/ping hue at bootup, you need to replace the CCFL.
Jamiphar (in the Marketforum) replaces them for around $150.-
You can DIY, but you need to be handy with a soldering iron, have very steady hands and the patience of an angel.
Not for the faint-of-heart. If DIY, you look at around $30-35.

There is no light at all. I can see the Thinkpad logo at power on because there's so much white on it, but nothing beyond that.

The package was most likely dropped in shipping. Is the CCFL sensitive to such an impact, or could it be something else?

If you have ATi 7500 graphics chip, it won't drive the uxga screen.
