Hi all,
I am fairly new to the this forum although I have been lurking for some time. I have gained some valuable tips for which I am truly grateful. Several years ago I had a Thinkpad 600E which was probably the best laptop I have ever owned. It was built like a tank and served my purposes extremely well. Recently I got a pretty sweet deal on a T30. I bought it as a knockaround and to experiment with different Linux distros. Of course the RAM slot was bad but thanks to some tips from this forum and a borrowed soldering iron I now have 1.5 G working RAM. Now I have changed my plans and have decided to use this laptop as my primary computer for work and play (I can use the old ACER for experimenting). I plan on replacing the Harddrive and am gathering some info on the drivers with the help of the IBM Driver matrix and DriverMax which leads me to a few questions:
1) The computer does not "seem" to have a chipset driver installed other than the default Microsoft driver. Is that normal? It is the i845d chipset.
2) The USB is 1.1. Is that something that can be upgraded to 2.0?
3) Are their any other hardware issues (similar to Bad memory slot) that are native to this model?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tony

Re: T30 Chipset drivers
1) Just the drivers from IBM/Lenovo will do fine.
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=236684U
Also get the Hardware Maintenance Manual from there. (under "User's guides and manuals" on the left)
After Windows installation, you should install DotNetFrameNetwork 2.0/SP1 or higher from M$, and then SystemUpdate from IBM/Lenovo. Then run it. It will get all you need.
2) No. Only possibility is a PCMCIA USB2.0 card.
3) Sometimes the GPU conks out for the LCD part. The external monitor (connection) usually still keeps working.
That's about it.

Re: T30 Chipset drivers
1) If you are looking through the Device Manager/System Devices you should probably see two Intel(R) 82845 Processor entries; one to I/O Controller and the other to AGP Controller. That's what I see on a T23; the T30 should be similar. If not, then you may not have a factory OS load. There is an Intel Chipset driver package at the bottom of this page that may solve your problem:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42358 (T30 Drivers and Software)
2) USB system is integrated into the motherboard. There would be no way of (easily) changing the system so that USB 2.0 speeds are available from the built-in ports. The most commonly recommended option is to get a USB 2.0-PCMCIA adapter.
3) The memory slot problem is the most common as far as I know. There may also be a problem with a loose graphics chip, similar to what is experienced with the T4x systems, but to a lesser extent. Not really a "problem" per se (since there are workarounds), but you may have some issues with installing some non-factory wireless cards.
edit: "It's a tie"
