Why is x61s hotter than x60s?

X60/X61 series specific matters only.

Why is x61s hotter than x60s?

#1 Post by ssd_thinkpad » Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:39 am

I wonder what makes thes x61s hotter than the x60s. Is it mostly
  • that the x61s Core2 Duo is hotter than x60 Core Duo
  • the higher clocked cpu
  • chipset
And what about using wwan, will it increase its heat very much so I am forced to turn fan on? And the more important question for me as a potential x61s buyer: Can I make the x61s as cool as the x60s by clocking down its cpu?

CPU and Chipset. Note that there are X60s units with Core 2 Duo processors, and those units runs the fan much like an X61s, rather than like the same X60s but with a Core Duo processor.

No (assuming that you are referring to an X60s with Core Duo processor).

Units that have left the factory with WWAN installed have two fans instead of one.

Additionally, X61 has much more aggressive fan settings in BIOS than X60, although some of this can be addressed using TPFC.

Thanks for your answers.

Can I control the second WWAN fan in tpfancontrol?

No. Further, machines with the second fan will not boot if the second fan is disconnected. (Point being that here is another component which can easily go "bad" and prevents machine use if it goes bad.) You might want a machine without the second fan, since its effectiveness is marginal at best.

Thanks! Which x60s have WWAN or are WWAN ready but no second fan?

No X60s has the second fan; the second fan was introduced with the X61 series.

There is no easy and unambiguous way to know which X60s is WWAN ready. One must determine that the second mPCIe slot exists -- the only sure way is to remove the palm rest and look, and one must have the WWAN antenna(s) -- the primary antenna on the right side of the LCD case, the auxiliary antenna under the palm rest, next to the second mPCIe socket.

For Europe, you will need a GSM card, and all except the Sierra Wireless MC8755 will require a modified BIOS on an X60s. The Sierra Wireless MC8755 or MC8775 need only the primary antenna.
