T22 shuts down after a minute, and wont power up for weeks

#1 Post by leechacks » Fri Mar 27, 2009 12:22 pm

Hi
My T22 started normally a few weeks ago then it shut down after a minute, then when trying to power up again nothing happens, i press the power button but it doesnt come on. The n yesterday i turned it on and was fine for about another minute then shut down, now i cant turn it on again. Im not sure if its the BoD, it doesnt seem to do what the other BoD posts says. I have tried with ac power only and with battery only and both but still no power. When last running i was able to check the power left in the battery and it was about 50 %. I have tried taking out the memory, hardrive, cd and took the keyboard off and put back on again. I bet if i try to turn it on in a weeks time it will start but only for a minute.
Any help would be appriciated, money is very low even non existant, so any suggestions appreciated (even the rubbish bin, lol)
Cheers
Lee

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Your system sounds like it has two problems: the "Blink of Death" (Bod) and a thermal issue. If the T22 only flashes the hard drive LED (the one to the far left that looks like a drum with an double-headed arrow) one time when the power button is pushed, then that would be the characteristic of the BoD. That, and having to wait for several days/weeks until the system does power up completely.

When a BoD system has finally decided to boot and run an operating system, it should continue to do so until you turn it off. Shutting down without any warning after the system has been running for several minutes is usually caused by a temperature problem. The thermal sensors would have detected an overheat condition and automatically cut power. This can be a result of an inefficient fan operation or lack of proper heat transfer from the CPU to the heatsink/fan assembly. To determine if that is it, you would need to inspect the fan to make sure that it is spinning at power up and remove it so that you can clean and re-apply a small amount of thermal grease; Arctic Silver 5 is the recommended type. If you don't already have it, here is the T2x Hardware Maintenance Manual:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4UYM3F

You can also run some diagnostics, if and when the system does boot for you again, to test the fan and thermal sensors. PC Doctor for DOS includes those tests. You can download it from here:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/ibm_t2x/ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso

You would be better off using this CD image instead of the normal floppy disk set as it will load faster; well, it will if you are able to burn the image onto a blank CD :) . If you don't have access to a CD burner and do have a floppy drive, the disk set is available here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4YZM3F

Under the Diagnostics/Other Devices menu you will find tests for the fan and thermal sensors.

One of the other things you might try (if you haven't already) is to remove the MiniPCI combo card and see if that helps. I've seen some strange power issues when that card goes bad. If your system does in fact have the BoD, then there may not be much help for it. The usual "fix" is to replace the motherboard but there's no guarantee that the replacement won't develop (or have) the same problem. Most recent information about this problem is in this thread:

Hi
Many thanks for your indepth reply, before i read you r reply i took the laptop apart, piece by piece, and checked all the connections and replaced the parts in stages, and the hd light did come on with a beep beep beep, this was before i put the hd, combo adapter, cd and ram. But on putting these all back the system didnt power up. Think this laptop may be destined for the bin. But when it does power up again i will run the diagnostic checks, then i will post my reply on here.
Once again thank you for your help i really appreciate it.
