T42p LCD replacement-- 14.1 to 15"?

#1 Post by Socket462 » Fri Mar 27, 2009 5:07 pm

I have a t42p (2373K9U) that has a bad LCD/invertor. If I buy an entire LCD lid assembly from Ebay, can I install a 15" LCD panel? I cannot find any info on this to tell me if the hinges are the same distance apart, the connector the same, or if my ATI gpu will even drive it properly. Current LCD is XGA (1024x768).

I don't need super high resolution, just want to get some more screen space.

Anyone know this answer?

thanks

The chassis for a 14.1" is much smaller than a 15" chassis. Measure it up and see if it feasible. I doubt it.

Not only are the hinges of a 14" & 15" spaced differently, the hinges themselves are different. The right hinge on a 14" is narrow and the left thick; on a 15" the left & right are both thick.

Your easiest mod would be to get a 14" SXGA+ lid assembly with 1400x1050 resolution. That LCD has about 80% more pixels: 786,432 vs. 1,470,000. Best of all it's an easy job that your GPU will surely support.

Thanks for the replies.. I have a couple of T42p's, but none with 15" screens to measure by.

I was hoping for a different answer :( but this helps a lot- I will look into the SXGA+ lid.

One question: You say that you have a T42p, but the 2373-K9U is regular (non-"p") T42...?

About suitable 14.1" SXGA+ LCD's, you may get one of those listed in the 14.1" LCD service parts - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p , being the 11P8346 (made by ID Tech) or the 11P8348 (Samsung). Check eBay for prices; you may perhaps pick up a dead 14.1" T4xp with a SXGA+ LCD at a low cost, and only use the LCD (and sell the rest of the parts). Alternatively, you may consider putting up a "WTB" (Want To Buy) advertisement at the Marketplace in this forum... all completely trustworthy and very knowledgeable sellers there.. highly recommended place to trade ThinkPad parts.

Good luck with the upgrade! :thumbs-UP:
