Another T40 fan question

#1 Post by pipspeak » Thu Jan 27, 2005 2:35 pm

I've read a lot of stuff about fan issues on the T40 but have another question (sorry if it has been covered elsewhere, I just haven't found it yet.)

My T40 starts up nice and silent but about three hours into the day the fan comes on. No surprise there. Problem is, the fan does not goes off for the rest of the day. Just keeps humming and cycling. Now, either there's a problem with it, or it simply doesn't do a very good job at cooling the circuitry. And it's not like I'm in a hot environment - the ambient temperature isabout 65 at the moment. I would not expect the cooling fan in my car to come on and stay on the next four hours!

I tried setting the CPU to adaptive but that made little difference (which highlights another problem... power scheme manager is not saving my new schemes). Is the fan issue something a bios update might fix?

only possible with a BIOS hack that reportedly doesn't work that well...

Try running Mobile Meter (find it on the web) and watch to see what the temperature behavior is. PRobably you will find that the fan is off at cold temperature, turns on at a hot setpoint, then cycles hi-low to maintain a reasonable internal temp. Probably it doesn't stay on long enough to get to a cold-turn-off point.

no, the problem is either the WLAN card (heat) or the graphics chip (heat). Both have a thermal sensor as well.

Thanks for the replies... I guess I'm living with it. The fan rarely kicks into high speed, just hums at its lowest speed all the time, so it's not a huge problem (until the fan dies).

I found one way to get the fan to eventually go off for a short time - leave the cdr tray open slightly. Guess that gets more air inside the unit.
