Severe Thinkpad Troubles -- FIXED

#1 Post by linko » Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:49 pm

I have had my X61 for a year now, and since I've had it, when I run without a battery in Linux, the processor has made a horrible buzzing noise. This is a Known Issue.

It also has had this annoying fan pulsating noise while running on battery, or AC, since the day I got it. This is also a Known Issue.

So, the 2.6.29 kernel comes out a week or two ago. I installed debian 5.0 a few days ago, and compiled a custom kernel. BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS ARE GONE! I'm very excited, and really wanted to let everyone know. As an extra, the new ath9k driver is working VERY WELL!!!

When compiling the kernel, I believe the only option I changed (from the debian 5.0 defaults) was setting the cpu type to be Core 2 Duo.

Great kernel release for thinkpad enthusiasts.

Hey linko, thanks for your post! I got a 2nd hand x200 today and am currently considering putting a linux distro on it. Having seen your post, I think I'll give Deb a try.
