Problems with Seagate 7200.4 on Z61p

#1 Post by chaukap » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:15 pm

Hi,

I recently installed the Seaage 7200.4 (500GB, 7200rpm) drive as the internal drive on my Z61p. I did a clone with Acronis true image and then updated the storage and power managment drivers. The drive intially works fine and the windows XP boot time is also reduced significantly.

However, after a while the drive stops responding for no reason. The HDD light on the laptop stays on, but I can sense that the drive is not spinning. This happens at no fixed interval, sometimes even before I see the login screen. I also once got a blue screen from windows. After a force boot the same thing happens.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? Did I just end up with a bad drive or is this something that can be fixed?

Thanks,
- Kaps

My guess is just bad drive :( But you can try out following things:
1. Run windows chkdsk, it could be just some corruption of the file system that might be easily fixed
2. Run PC-Doctor/Lenovo System Toolbox, the HD tests
3. Run Seatools, Seagate program for testing their HDs

The re-seating of the drive dint work. I tried it earlier.

I am trying to return it and ask for a replacement. Seagate has long waiting times :( to talk to a support person.
