T40 display problem

#1 Post by compint » Sun Mar 29, 2009 9:34 pm

I have a T40 that seems to boot up normally but after about 4 min. in windows, the display shuts off. Everything else is normal but you cannot see anything. When I connect an external monitor and boot, I get the same thing. If I reboot several times, it seems like the shorter time it will stay on, almost as if after the pc is warmed up it will turn off the display. I have read the video chip goes bad in these. Could this be it? If so, would I need to replace the motherboard?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum!

I agree that it sounds as if your GPU has become loose from the motherboard - this is a very well known error on e.g. T40's... "the loose GPU syndrome". Fortunately, this can (most likely) be fixed, either through soldering the GPU again, or by swapping out the entire motherboard.

If you look around just a tiny, little bit  you will see the sticky at the top of this (T4x) forum, entitled: T42 shuts down when i move it - have a look there! About how/where to have your motherboard fixed, see the thread Superior Reball GPU Fix. New (refurbished) motherboards may also be found very cheap; see e.g. the thread LF: T4x mobo - so you may consider contacting forum-member baisley. Feel free to use the very useful search function on this forum to learn more about this error, or other ThinkPad-related issues.
