Sony DRU-710A Crapped? Or is My PC Crapped?

#1 Post by eriqesque » Thu Jan 27, 2005 10:20 pm

Got a Problem. On My desktop PC
This is the 2nd Sony 710A to do this what can be the cause?
The 1st one worked great for about a month and 1/2.
2nd one pooped 1st time of use.
I tried to burn a CD and Nero hung during the lead out. Had to abort and restart the computer and from this point on the drive will not recognize CD's at all. DVD's are just fine plays them and Burns them.
CD's however are not useable at all.
Commercial music CD's or Software CD's nothing. What could possibly be the problem.
Is is the Drive? Iam beginning to think something is wrong with the computer itself except evrything else works fine. I mean if the IDE was out the drive wouldn't work at all, right?

Since this is a forum for IBM Thinkpads, I'm not sure how much help you're going to find here. However I would suggest the following places for help:
www.cdfreaks.com (look in the forum section).
www.dvdrhelp.com (also the forum section) and,
www.cdrinfo.com (forum section).

Have you tried the latest firmware update for your drive? www.rpc1.com
I believe that the Sony DRU-710A is a re-badged LiteON SOHW-1633S, so you might search that out in these forums. What I've found is the cdfreaks site's LiteOn category is full of information for your drive with people who have had similar problems.

Anyway, good luck

Well thanks for the links.
And that's why I posted in the Off-Topic since it isn't regarding a thinkpad.

I hope the information was helpful. Please post back and let us know if you got your drive working correctly and if so, what you had to do.

Well accrording to some research on the sites you provided and some googling. The problem is I guess happening more and more with this drive. So since this is the 2nd one I have had in a month I just gonna dump it and move on.
Thanks again for the info.

I've always had good luck with LiteOn drives...have 4 of them total around my house and no trouble at all. Maybe it's just that model. See if the store where you bought it would be willing to trade you for a different model (you've had 2 lemons so far). My first Liteon burner was a 410S which was a 4X burner. Through firmware upgrades, it is now a "832S," which burns at 8X (went from single layer to dual layer burning capability too) and with bit-setting enabled (burns DVD-ROM), thanks to the Omniflasher firmware program someone developed over on CDFreaks. I have absolutely no coasters and no problems with my use of this really fine drive. Just wish LiteOn would make a small enough drive for our ThinkPads (though they do sell a slim drive in a usb driven design).
