Corsair vs Mushkin ???

#1 Post by aamsel » Fri Jan 28, 2005 2:37 am

I am going to get a 1GB PC2700 200 pin SODIMM module for my 2378FVU.

I don't really feel like paying an extra $100 + for a Crucial module.

Between Corsair and Mushkin, which one would you favor ???

Thanks,
Andrew

Which ever's cheapest. It won't make much of a difference, since they're both good companies that make decent memory.

Nobody ever had an "issue" or heard of "issues" with either brand?

Or, is their any truly compelling reason to fork over that much extra money for the Crucial stuff?? Last I heard, crucial.com was selling some modules that do NOT have Micron chips on them. Few but some.

If you ask around, for every manufacturer, you'll find someone who has had an issue with their products.

I installed Kingston's mem. It's good enough, I think.

I fully realize that, however...
There has virtually NEVER been an issue with Crucial, but since they cost so much, I was looking for the best second choice.

(yes, I realize that there must be some Crucial issues also, but overall they are great. Normally, I will pay the little bit extra for Crucial, but for 1GB SODIMMS they are WAY more.

So, it is either toss the included 256MB and get (2) Crucial 512MB modules, or add some other 1GB module to the included 256MB. )

Opinions on what anyone would do more than welcome!

I think add a pair of new one is better. Less likely to have compatibility problem.

My understanding is that compatibility problems usually only occur when the module that you add is not CAS 2.5. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have used both of those brands for years, and they are both top notch. You cant go wrong with either.

You're probably right about that but when you down-clock the Crucial 2700 sticks to 2100 which is what my Thinkpad (2373-M3U) does, you get CAS 2 memory... Don't think it's a problem on mine though. Running perfectly fine. Also, if you want, I have an extra 512mb SODIMM from Crucial sitting right here and need to sell it. If you're interested, PM me with an offer (including shipping). I am astonished to hear of Crucial being more expensive than Mushkin or Corsair. Normally it's the other way around... Crucial has had its issues from time to time, but their reliability factor is the highest of any brand I've ever used. That's why I stick with them. I buy their stuff used and it is still under warranty. That's not the case with most other manufacturers... Just something to keep in mind. Now Kingston, on the other hand, is stuff that I have no respect for what so ever. I have seen so many bad sticks of Kingston's value ram that I am extremely leery of using it at all. Maybe it's just me, but seeing 20 bad sticks of RAM in a year and 18 of them being Kingston seemed like more than a coincidence. Sorry for the longwinded post!

My desktop has 1GB of the Kingston Hyper-X stuff, really good RAM, never used their Value stuff, and sounds like I won't be trying it, thanks.

The Crucial is only more money for the 1GB SODIMM, the 512MB parts are all compeditive between the 3 companies, no major difference.

Guess I need to decide if having the ability to (someday) go to 2GB is important at all. I kind of have my doubts that it is.

Anyone here running a Thinkpad with 2GB or anyone with plans to ever do so?????
