Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
Hello all,
After some efforts I have managed to get my 240x up and running. There is one flaw though - under Windows XP the trackpoint does not work properly. Sometimes after I boot the notebook, the trackpoint will not move the mouse cursor. It is active in the hardware manager and Windows states that there are no problems with this device as well as hardware conflicts. Only a next reboot can fix this. Clearly this is not the fault of the trackpoint itself - it works every time on Puppy Linux and Windows 98. So my question: has anyone of you encountered this problem and if yes, how did you managed to cope with it ?
Thanks in advance,
sb102

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
Ironically, I just finished a similar project of getting my old, much loved 240x up and running. I'm using Ubuntu Hardy Heron as it's one of my favorites. However I do clearly remember an updated driver to fix this problem with XP, but I've searched the "new" (sarcasm) Lenovo site and simply cannot find it. Perhaps someone else in our wonderful forum population will have the answer, as I know it's out there, but cannot find it. Good Luck!sb102 wrote:After some efforts I have managed to get my 240x up and running. There is one flaw though - under Windows XP the trackpoint does not work properly. Hello,
although the 240X is not listed, older and newer Thinkpads are. Enough reason to try if this one works:

Hi,
There is no reason why the trackpoint should not work under Win XP.
Drivers can be found at
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SHY-42DLNW
Try the one for configuration utility. Once installed you can manage the trackpoint.

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
Thanks for all your help so far. I did install the drivers from the page that emeu1 provided - that didn't help (the problem still occurs although there were no problems during the driver update). Now I probably know why the 240x is not among the supported models for this driver (my guess is that the trackpoint for 240x is very specific and needs particular drivers). As for hjanzen's post -I think you misunderstood me. I do not have problems with the configuration of the trackpoint (I can do this because the IBM trackpoint driver is included with XP - along with the control panel, so this is not a case of just switching it on or making aditional changes in the config) but with its random inability to work. Also if you take a closer look on the driver webpage you will notice that there are only a few for the 240x designed for windows XP (again this case is connected with the trackpoint - on the webpage under the trackpoint section it is stated that there are only drivers for windows 9x/me/nt 4.0 and for win 2k they are included in the OS itself - this is also true for windows XP, as I mentioned earlier). Archer6 however mentioned something about an update that could fix this problem. Does anyone of you know where to look for it ?

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
If you install the driver for the config. utility from the webside that I suggested ( the one for winXP version 3.26) you will see that from within this conf. util. you can switch the trackpoint off or on...
Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
Hi,
I found the same problem with track point in winxp, but no answer!!!
I am now back to win2k, and this problem never happened, and for me is more adecuated to 240x than XP. Ok a few things missing, but I am happy.
Cheers

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
I've had the same issue after installing XP onto the 240x. Sometimes the trackpoint works upon the login screen and sometime it doesn't. As far as I know I've installed all the trackpoint drivers.
The weird thing is I get the error upon booting up:
"ERROR 0188 – Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area or Bad CRC2"
I've googled this up and no site really provides me an answer. Btw, all google results come up w/ "ERROR 0188 – Invalid RFID Serialization Information Area or Bad CRC2" but mine shows the same error but w/out the "bad crc2" part. I hit ESC as always to get out of it to boot normally but I would not want to do that every time!
I also installed XP to the formatted drive via Puppy Linux USB via floppy boot wake
Anyone in this thread solve the problem (beside resorting back to W2k)?

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
I may once more suggest to install the configuration driver for XP ( not the trackpoint driver) mentioned in my above post and set the trackpoint "on" in the configuration program.
I 'm using Win XP pro for years without any problems on my 240X

I had no problem with the trackpoint of my 240x unter Windows XP.
I just installed the drivers for 240x from the Lenovo website and averything worked like a charm.
So my guess is that you either have broken hardware or some other software you installed is responsible.

i've got the same problem, which usually manifests once i boot into/resume back to windows.
even though with a trackpoint driver installed, it still happens every now and then. with W2K/W98/ubuntu, this is never a problem.
i've resigned to just living with the bug/quirk and usually suspend and resume to get the mouse working again...

Re: Problem with trackpoint on an IBM TP 240x under Windows XP
Both my current 240Z and the 240X I owned back in 2006 have this issue, whereas none of the three 240's (300MHz, 366MHz and 400MHz) I had showed this problem.
Following hjanzen's suggestion, I installed the config utility. Then on that same page I saw the supplemental files for XP, which sounded like they might be helpful and so I installed them too. Now the problem is gone!
