Wireless Drivers?

#1 Post by murray1 » Thu Apr 02, 2009 3:13 pm

Hey, I recently reformatted my T40 and now my internal wireless card doesn't work anymore. I am not sure if I need to download the drivers or what, I don't get any errors or anything, the computer just doesn't seem to realize it is there.

I took it apart to look for serial numbers and I have been searching for drivers but can't find any. Here are the serial numbers I found.

Spares #: 390865-002
Assembly #: 390427-003
Intel Serial #: B14390465ABC89196004

Thanks for any help.

If you reformatted with the proper recovery CD's then the driver is there. If you did not use the recovery CD's, then the card is likely an Intel 2100 bg card because that is what came stock with those machines. The driver that came with the card was very poor. Go to the Lenovo site -> Support and enter your machine type into the space. In the support page that comes up, look for the wireless NIC and look for the newest Intel driver. That should work. Many of us with those machines upgraded to Atheros (IBM) cards because they worked better, but the newest Intel drivers help as well. ... JDH

Thanks for the quick reply. This internal card didn't come with my laptop though, I was given it for Christmas a couple years ago. I thought I had done a reformat since then but now I am not sure.

It is an HP part number, so they probably have the driver. Failing that, look here for an IBM 11 a/b/g card as it will likely work better. ... JDH

If it's not an IBM wireless card, you should be getting an 1802 error on POST. Did you ever apply the BIOS hack to prevent this? Does the card show up in the BIOS or in DOS (ipconfig /all)?

When we installed the cards we updated the Bios. I guess that stays when you reformat?

I noticed in my dd hardware wizard it has it listed with an error saying it needs drivers. If I could just find the ones for it I think it would work again.

Edit: I am going to have to tear this thing open again and look for some other numbers because these all seem to be useless.

I have had all sorts of problems over the years and have acquired a few resourceful tools.

For this one mentioned, now, I have checked and it is Freeware. I've used older incarnations and is a good little tool. If you google for UnknownDeviceIdentifier (one word).

What it does is list some very detailed and precise information about the particular peice of hardware you are interested in. Plus a bunch of other information on other bits. Well worth to have in your mobile toolkit :)

Hey, thanks man.

That thing works like a charm and gave me the information I needed to find the drivers. Everything is working like a charm now.

Thanks for all the help guys.
