A31 LCD Issue

#1 Post by cybercorsair » Fri Apr 03, 2009 6:47 am

HI all i have a problem and i don't know if it due to my install or not but screen (the LCD) had gone out. I was out earlier tonight we would doing out our weekly late night work and i was using the system I just updated and it was work great and some time during my work i noted a low battery but i was running off the Adapter. i also noted a slight flicker .
I check all the plus and all seem to be in right and i thought i don't need the battery as it wasn't work on the system hold a charge. i took it out and the system shut down. i re-power up all worked and the flicker didn't come back with the battery out. i work a few hours more and check the heat and cup with some software all was working good no high heat or any other problem. this is an A31 2652 M3U with the SXGA+ screen and i thnk the back light converter just dumped on me. but not sure . i did not small flicker once before but it seem to work fine .

Any one know the cost is going to be to fix this ?
I done this before it no problem getting into the unit but i hate see all the work with getting this one upgraded with the CPU to have the screen die and cost me more than the whole system.

CPU testing and systems testing on the upgrade has shown no problems and I was hoping to get a new HD for it but i am guess it that is on hld till i know where to go next .
Could I have done something during the cpu install to get a plug to come out?
the display is seen by the system and they external monitor show all is well on the HD .
diag said all is well just not light in the LCD screen.

Ok off to eBay to price parts if you a better place PLEASE LET ME KNOW
the inverter is the -62P9871 I just need to know how to test it too .. I hate know it is the screen they cost as much as the unit it self. Inverters are cheaper .. but i see no lights on the screen and the system does boot ok on external monitor the screen is dark . and I have pulled the inverter to have ready to replace as soon as i can get a new one .
Any help on this would be great.

With the system fully booted up and not running off of the external display, if you shine a flashlight into the Thinkpads LCD, do you see any faint images or text?

No, it means an Inverter or a CCFL (backlight) or a fuse on the systemboard. I'd try an inverter first.

Just make sure that you get the correct inverter for the type of LCD that you have...

have the part# 62P9871 FRU 62P9872 both have to be onnthe card part tag..

shopping around now.

I have good feeling it the inverter as i said there was a flicker that was just so lite like a lose connection and no warning. system stared them I note after turning around no screen. connected monitor and i had a desk top but no LCD.
can the fuse be changed or is that shop fix?

Thanks all for the help if the admin want to nmove this part out to a new thread go ahead as i don't want to make people worry that changing a cup can blow your system as I don't think it did I did not a bit a screen flicker but thought it was drive booting doing tha way be for i did the cpu change. sad trhis yong system that mt C4U and the inverter in it seem good for now.

Ok will keep all posted .. it mayt be a week unless i get luck on hunting parts down .. right now a inverter on a buy now $22. plus shipping of $8

thanks

Ok I found the same inverter but it wasn't the problem as many though and now i need to find the back lights for the SXGA+ 15" screen and what the part number is or do I have to replace all of the screen(search on ebay shows the backlights) I just need to know which ones.
IF some can point me in there right direction this would be of great help

You have a standard 15" screen, so this is what you need:
http://www.lcdparts.net/ccflDetail.aspx ... NOVOIBM15R
Cost about $10.- + shipping.
Check this: http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflinstallation.html
They (moniserv = lcdparts) will also do it for you for $75.-

I been looking at the replacement lamps but I starting to to think more in just getting an LCD replacement with lamps just to save time as right now my time is limited to working on other people system than my own and dropping screen in vs the lamps has some time savings.

I will look into this info as I know soon or later my other A31 will do the same so having the info will help.

I am looking at both these screens on Ebay not sure 100% if the will work but did have the thought I could transfer the lights from what ever one I get to my current one I know is in good shape.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0217157432.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0221146954

Thinking of
Going to pull the screen to go over to my surplus show and see what they have in stock as they get some nice new in the box LCDs that could work ..

Ok Thanks for the info will read and see what look good

The first one should work, provided you also get the corresponding SXGA+ inverter and LCD cable.
The second one is a 14.1" LCD. Does not fit in yours.

It's the same amount of work, and no guarantee that the CCFL from the cracked screen works!
It might be an old CCFL or you might even break it while trying to remove it.
Buy two new CCFLs (one as spare) and start from there. LCDPARTS/MONISERV have all the info you need.
