Another 600E Ram Question

#1 Post by Ronny Floyd » Sun Apr 05, 2009 1:51 pm

Hi Guys,

After much testing, I have resolved that one of the memory sockets in my 600E is not working properly. With the latest BIOS revision I was using 2x256 modules but kept getting the BSOD. Out of curiousity this morning, I did a Google search for 512mb/pc100/144-pin and found that there is a 512mb (with 16 chips) available...... http://www.memorysuppliers.com/kin51pc144pi3.html

Can I utilize my one good socket by installing 1x512mb in order to max out the ram in the 600E ?????

Has anyone tried using 1x512 installed in just one socket ?

Thanks Ronny

As far as I know, any standard-height 512MB SODIMM, regardless of the number of memory chips on it, will not work in a 600E. The limitation is due to the refresh specification. The "magical" number of 16 is specific to the 256MB module size. For a 512MB to have the same refresh characteristics, there would need to be 32 parts on the module. And that assumes that the chipset in the 600E can even address that amount of memory for each module.

As a test, I plugged in a Micron MT16LSDF6464 (16 chip 512MB module) into a 600E and it refused to boot. It did power up, with a blank screen and no beeps, but remained "dead".
