Best sleeve / slipcase for x40?

#1 Post by PoisonJam » Tue Apr 07, 2009 4:25 pm

Hi everyone :)

Recently got myself an x40 on ebay that was a bit undersold - it's mint, still holds several hours' charge and generally seems like it's barely used - cost me just £160 delivered with the docking bay (no OS though). It replaces my ageing X21 and I'm ecstatic with it! :thumbs-UP:

Anyway, I am now looking for a sleeve for it. I've been eyeing up the Crupler Gimp 12" and, mostly, the Built NY Laptop Sleeve 12". Looking for a snug fit but the extended battery jutting out on my x40 gives it odd dimensions, esp compared to the widescreen laptops.

Does anyone have any experience with either case or recommend any others?

Compare your X40's dimensions with battery to the interior dimensions before purchase.

I don't know if this case is available in the UK, but here in the
US there's a portable DVD case that works 100% for the X40/41.
It's made by a company called Sentry and the model is MD-DVD.
The price is only $20 and it's a perfect fit, with or without extended
battery. It's also deep enough to allow the dock but the velcro
straps are too short to go all the way around with the larger battery
installed.

Thanks, tim S. Other users' hands-on experiences with cases is exactly what I'm after, as a snug fit means the laptop is more secure with no extra baggage. Unfortunately that case isn't available over here :(

I'm also really keen on a neoprene case because I expect the material will absorb impacts well and has waterproof properties.

I've been using sleeves from WaterField for a few years. They have different sizes available to accommodate the different battery sizes. I don't have mine with me at the moment to tell you the size I use, but I'm pretty certain I have the size appropriate for the 4cell battery. The laptop fits in fine anyway with the 8cell if it's oriented so that the battery sticks out the opening (horizontal sleeve). I have a flap on mine which covers the barely exposed portion nicely.

I have a Crumpler Gimp 12" for my X31 and love it. Very good protection, thick neoprene and an enormously thick protected zipper. Fun to look at too - mine is the bright red one (I have a kaki/black one for my old X30). Some remarks though: if you want to plug in the charge cable with the zipper mostly closed, you must put the X31 either flipped over (which only means that the Crumpler logo will not be on the side of the screen lid), or upside down (with the backside towards the opening part of the zip). I guess that will be the case with most zippered slipcases.
There is some room/stretch in the case but I'm not sure it will be enough to accommodate an extended battery.
Anyway, the quality of the material and finish are hard to beat.
