T23 starts automatically upon plugging in AC adapter

Friend of mine has a T23 with a weird problem.
The situation is as follows:
T23 with XP-Pro/SP3 is switched off, either using the Power button, or the Windows/Start/Turn off routine.
T23 is put away with AC adapter disconnected. The (charged) battery remains in the T23.
When he now wants to use it again, he plugs in the AC adapter.
But as soon as he lifts up the lid, it boots automatically!
The laptop was not in Standby or Hibernation.
Any ideas?

What happens to it when the AC is not connected and he opens the lid
If it still starts with the ac NOT connected it has to be an OS issue

Without AC plugged in nothing happens until you press the Power button.

With the T23 switched off and no AC, you can open the lid and nothing happens.
But when you (with open lid) plug in the AC, it boots!
Curiouser and curiouser!

Some more info:
when it starts up, it first starts showing the network boot-ROM info, then it 'picks up' the hard disk and boots into XP.
I don't have this laptop here, so I am trying to do "diagnosis" from a distance.

OK
First statement pointed towards electrical issue
2nd statement is back to the OS/Bios

Pull the HDD and let me know

Im betting if you default the BIOS the problem will go away

I got onto that T23 last night, and reset BIOS to Default values.
It now boots straight into Windows, no more LAN BootROM messages.
The F12 boot select option shows again (it was activated before the reset, but did not show).

When I now (with machine off and lid open) put in the AC, the fan comes on, the HD start spinning, but this only lasts for about 2 seconds and then shuts down. The battery and AC LEDS burn correctly.

So it's almost, but not quite, there.

Perhaps an update to the Embedded Controller would solve the problem? The danger of course is, would the current condition of the system prevent a successful update or could it even brick the system?

Both BIOS and Embedded Controller are updated to the latest available versions (Bios 1.20 and ECP 1.06.a).
