Cannot boot T400 from usb drive.

#1 Post by DRE_PSO » Thu Apr 09, 2009 3:34 pm

I'm trying to boot a Lenovo T400 laptop from a USB thumb drive. The thumb drive contains a version of Ghost which I launch to image the laptop up to my Ghost server. I can successfully boot a Ghost session from a CD, but I have to change the SATA settings in the BIOS to accomplish this. I'm trying to move away from CD's and modifying the BIOS.

Every time I try to boot, I receive the message "Missing Operating System." I can successfully boot and image a slew of Dell computers with the same thumb drive, so I don't think it is the drive. The operating system on the laptop is Windows XP. The thumb drive uses the Windows 98 command.com to boot and is formatted in FAT32.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I reformatted the USB drive with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and then copied back all my files. I can now successfuly boot a Lenovo T400 with my thumb drive. I was using a Windows 98 boot disk to fdisk and then format the disk. (This is my first attempt at this and a collegue suggested that was the proper way to go) Even though the system saw the thumb drive as drive C I guess it did not properly format it as the active disk.
