X41 Tablet- was shipped in mail, now no LCD image just ext.

#1 Post by freerange » Sat Apr 11, 2009 6:37 pm

As the title states. I picked up another X41 Tablet and saw pictures of it running prior to shipping. When it arrived, the LCD never worked, but I do have an image on an external monitor. The LED status lights are working on the monitor, but nothing on the LCD. Any ideas?

The seller is being great and just wants me to return it for a full refund, but I kind of hate to ship away a rather mint condition X41 Tablet that came to me with 4 cycles on the battery.

I checked out the drivers for vid. and the monitor, but then realized its beyond that because there is nothing during boot up or bios info. I regularly have T4x series in pieces swapping system boards but never dug into my other T41 Tablet. Anything obvious to check without getting too far inside? Maybe pressing where the LCD attaches to the system board in case it popped loose (I know on the T4x series it's next to the power input jack)?

Thanks!

If you shine a light on the LCD during booting, can you see the splash screen?

Just tried it. Yes, I can dimly see everything from booting to the desktop.

The CCF backlight was damaged during shipment.

Thanks. I did a few searches in the meantime and checked out a few possibilities (connection to inverter, CCFL leads,...) and same result- everything functions fine including digitizer, provided I supply the light. I hate to see it go. Maybe I'll work out a deal with the seller and swap it out.

Thanks for all the help. :)

Ouch - I tried replacing just the backlight on an older X31 I had. Totally screwed up the LCD (there are really REALLY fine wires controlling each row and column of pixels) and got 2 pink lines down the center. Then, though various attempts at fixing it, I got 8 lines, and then more, and then a refurbished X31 from eBay. I concluded that if your CCFL goes, you should either hire the work out, or get a new screen, which includes the backlight (not TOO hard to replace, but not easy, either)

The column driver flex circuit lines are bonded by a machine. So if a vertical line appears, there is really no way to fix it at home.

When you take them apart, one just have to be careful not to flex them too much. It may take a panel or two to get the hang of it. They are not easy to do but quite a few members have done it.

My son jumped on our T42 Flexview SXGA+ display and so I ordered a samsung panel from Malaysia to give it the old college-try to replace it - and save myself $300. After I got it all apart and all the micro screws were stuck to pieces of tape on the table at the correct positions so that i could figure out exactly where each screw belonged during reassembly ...

I took fully 13 attempts to get the bezel back on, and "trowel" the wires around the display so that the bezel would close without binding. It took me a full 1.5 hours to reassemble what had taken less than 15 mins to take apart. I had to take 3 coffee breaks to avoid breaking the thing out of frustration. Believe you me, I was very close to "forcing it closed, darnit!" several times!!

I didn't even have to open the panel to replace the CCFL. This is not a simple repair. Its SO MUCH worth your time to spend $20 to ship it back to the seller and get your money back !!!

Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.
