Slot-Loading DVD Drives

Has anyone ever tried to install one of the Panasonic/M a t s u s h i t a slot-loading DVD drives in a T4x? I know that technically they should work but of course the issue would be how they fit into the casing.

For T4x Ultrabay Slim the back connector is the issue. It uses a different design from those used in Apple laptops, where the slot drive are common. If you find a slot drive with the same back connector, it should work.

I thought that any 9.5mm drive in the Panasonic UJ-xxx series would be compatible with a ThinkPad, at least physically. Am I mistaken?

From what I know, the UJ series would need to have a "2" at the end (e.g., UJ-842) to be of the "slim" (9.5mm) design. Furthermore, the 9.5mm slot-load models end with "7" (UJ-857). However, there may be a couple of different connectors at the back end as sjthinkpadder has noted. Be sure you get a good look at that connector before committing to buy.
