Re: barebone thinkpad t42 models
They are not available on ibm.com. They were listed for a few days due to IBM's mistake. Akeskira ordered one http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... t=barebone and it looks as though he will get it in about two weeks. Call IBM, and see if there is a chance to order one.

I had ordered one of those as well during the site mistake. However, a couple weeks later I called IBM, and they told me there was no way they would ship the computers like that. The order status still had said the order was okay, but the sales guy explained that once the order got to the point where it was to be kitted, it would be rejected because they cannot ship them without hard drives or OS. That is understandable because a few of the T42's special features (access ibm, rapid restore, active protection on hds, etc) all rely on the hidden partition or drivers. I was tempted to try for it anyway, cept I really didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks to find out my order was cancelled - and at around the same time, the IBM shareholder site had a price mistake, giving 15% off for express models. So I switched to an express model, which was exactly the same as the bare-bones model but with a 60GB HD, XP Pro, CD/rw+DVD for $350 more.
Good luck if you ordered a bare-bones model - and let us know if you receive it!

I have a 2379EZU (T42p barebones) on order still. I got it with mastercard discount so will let the order stand to see if they ship. I have a spare 60gig 7200rpm HD and a 1 gig sodimm I can pop in it. Also just received the DVD-RW ultrabay slim drive (either for my current T41p or for the T42p if it ever ships). I mainly wanted to see how I like the model with the 15" LCD since I have two refurbished T41ps. But I just won an 1.8Ghz Dothan CPU that I plan to try in one of the T41ps, so I won't be too heartbroken if the T42p barebones doesn't ship. I am hoping the Dothan runs slightly cooler during gaming since it takes less juice on full power.
