UPDATE: First experience with IBM service. IBM ROCKS!!!!

#1 Post by thinkpadhk » Fri Jan 28, 2005 5:05 pm

OK....

So I hope you all have read my post from yesterday.

To summarize:
I called IBM at about 11:30pm yesterday to complain that my hard drive makes an annoying clicking sound. In a matter of minutes the service rep was sending me a new hard drive AND a set of Recovery CD's for free! I also asked them to throw in a Thai keyboard, and lo and behold... they added that too. No hassles, and very fast.

Understandably, I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe it. I was sceptical that I would receive all the stuff in a timely manner. I was expecting that it could take several weeks according to some of the complaints on this forum.

So this is what happened today (the day after I called IBM):
I went to my apartment at lunch and found two packages from IBM! Yes, the CD's and the hard drive arrived in LESS THAN A DAY!!! Can you believe that? I still haven't received the keyboard but I'll bet money that it'll probably be here by the end of the day.

SUMMARY:
IBM TOTALLY ROCKS!!!!

Yup they usually overnight their replacement parts in the US. One time a replacement part I needed was out of stock, IBM UPS express it from hong kong and it took less than 4 business days.

DHL express is very good too. They deliver in the morning. They don't require first person signature. Their scheduled pickup is also fast and flexible (available till 7pm for residential pickup).

I know this may be off topic for this thread, but what's the plus of having a thai keyboard? What's the difference?

It is spoken in hushed whispers around the campfires of Thinkpad worshipers (praise be to IBM!) that the Thai keyboard instills mystical properties in the user, the least of which is never having to run spellcheck, backup your files or defrag your HD.

The Chinese keyboard only makes you want to move to the city, start a computer business and buy a BMW!

For those who have had the pleasure of using both, the Thai-manufactured keyboards have slightly more "IBM" feel to them - very nice feedback and tactile feel, with slight clicking feedback as you type. The Chinese keyboards are just fine - same exact design and everything, they just feel ever so slightly less "clicky." Unless you try them side by side, it's hard to tell for most people the difference, but... since I do have both - I have to admit, I like the Thai keyboard better. I've had various Thinkpads for many years and this is the Rolls-Royce of keyboards - I hope Lenovo doesn't kill that excellent feel that IBM keyboards generally have.

My keyboard developed a certain wear in the more commonly used areas. Try the different buttons on yours..
