Which Flexview T60 intel gpu wwan motherboard should I take?

#1 Post by ssd_thinkpad » Tue Apr 14, 2009 12:06 pm

There are two motherboards mentioned in t60 manual who provide wwan and integrated gpu which supports 2048x1536 at 75 Hz and Media Expansion Cards, which enable digital display connectors like DVI (intel specifications pdf) (Advanced Mini Dock overview says all T60 models provide DVI).

FRU 41W1362 System board assembly, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with wireless WAN v 1951-CTO, 4Ex, 4Kx v 1953-CTO, EBx, ECx, EMx, ENx
FRU 41W1448 Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with wireless WAN v 1951-CTO, 64x, 73x, 74x, FBx, PCx, PFx v 1953-CTO, EVx, EWx, EXx, EYx, EZx, H2x, H3x, H4x, H5x, H6x, H7x, H8x v 1954-CTO, DGx.
  • Do both motherboards support my SXGA+ Flexview display?
  • If yes, which one should I take, the second one is 50 € cheaper, what are the other differences?

See the thread Flexview model with integrated graphics and DVI where you (already) asked a related question, and where George (ajkula66) already pointed to an answer:

Any model starting with 19xx equals Intel graphics, so they should be out there...although I have yet to see one.

I do not see a statement which confirms that both motherboards are compatible to Flexview. I know there are integrated gpu flexview models, but I do not know if these models also have wwan. Which one should I take, the second one is 50 € cheaper, what are the other differences?

@ssd_thinkpad:

You will not find a statement that you're looking for. Face it, with either of these planars you're rolling a dice.

Although T60 units with Intel graphics and IPS LCD exist on paper, I've never seen one, or known of an example in existence. This comes from someone who has owned many unusual ThinkPads, including a couple of likely one-off testbed units...

Back to answer your original question:

If it were me. I'd go with one that has WWAN enabled.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. Both motherboards are really cheap (300 € and 250 €) and support wwan. First I wanted to use a T61 motherboard but then thought about possible incompatibilities for some components, including my cpu. After reading a lenovoblogs.com blog entry about installing the wwan cables on a T61 screen I am not sure if I can manage all of this. This blog post did not give me more hope :)

I replaced my motherboard with the FRU 41W1448 motherboard and included the wwan accessory (sim card, antennas, card). The integrated graphics supports the SXGA+ display. I noticed far better display quality when watching dvds. The former x1300 ATI card gave me videos with low quality (lots of pixels). The intel gpu ranks around the same with the former x1300 ati card in the windows vista gpu ranking.

I removed the internal modem, speaker, pcmcia and disconnected connectors to fingerprint reader and touchpad. Now the notebook is completely silent when on the road, while at home sound works great through either docking station or the build in audio output.

The upgraded thinkpad uses around 3 watt less in vista (17-18 watt instead of 20-21 watt). In windows 7 power usage goes sometimes down to 14 watt. All these values were measured with wwan enabled and full brightness. That would make up to 5 hours on battery usage with the 9 cell battery with wireless enabled and full brightness. With wireless disabled and lowest brightness, it uses less than 10 watt on Windows 7 which would make more than 7 hours with the large battery.
