Installing a new T40 system board

#1 Post by megascribe » Tue Apr 14, 2009 2:11 pm

The system board on my T40 died and I'm replacing it with a T40P FireGL 91P7247 Motherboard 91P7247. I have the thing apart on my desk and everything seems straightforward, except for the little LCD cut off switch on the keyboard bezel (My T40 has the half one). I'm having trouble figuring out how it goes back together and the manual is of no help. There's a white plastic thingy that goes somewhere under the switch somehow. Is there a better illustration source then the manual out there? Something with assembly photos that show how this thing goes together? Maybe something that shows the whole system board replacement?

If you have a white plastic piece, my guess is that it broke off the bottom of the keyboard bezel. All that stuff (the switch, etc) is part of the bezel. If you want me to look at what you have, send me a pm. I'll give you an email address to send a picture.

Well, that makes sense. Sure, Rick, let's do that. It's holding me up putting this thing back together. It was just lying under the switch on the mother board. I bought the T40 on Ebay about five years ago. It was in good shape and didn't give me any problems until I started messing with it - first a memory upgrade to one gig, then a bigger hard drive. Then I did something stupid, I upgraded the CPU and tried to clock it using the wire trick. That's when the lights went out. When I opened the box, I found out this thing has been messed with before. There are a lot of miss-matched screws and the bosses under the keyboard bezel where the screws bite into are snapped off on the screws. I had a tough time getting them off. I'll try to epoxy them back on. Maybe it would be better just to buy a new bezel.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Yup that little bit of white plastic is off the keyboard bezel and yup, they break off!!
You should be able to epoxy them back on

The number of different screws makes it very difficult to keep track of what's what, and so I put together a little document which you can find in my signature.
You can get it here too.

Could you do me a favour and see if my sig links make any sense to you. I've had to do it that way to get as much information into a limited space and something tells me it doesn't quite work!

Hi Nick,

The first link in your signature works OK as a link to the announcement on this site about opening a UK and European reflowing service.

The next link gives me an error message that I can neither ignore nor override.

The mentions of pdfs are not links so they cannot be opened.

I hope this helps.

Yep, following instructions (i.e. core link + red part) gives a URL like:
http://nickpaton.fireflyinternet.co.uk/ ... 0Fuses.pdf
but all we get then is: 403 Forbidden
