760e, bought in '98 for cheap on eBay 'cause the guy said sound didn't work. Installed debian, sound worked
fine. Called it "heraclitus" after the famous old-Greek philosopher. It did some traveling: across Atlantic, 4
years in Poland, then across the Atlantic again, thru Panama, across the Pacific via Tahiti to New Zealand.
New keyboard. Increasing flakiness unto death: salt contamination. Replaced this last year by t22 of the
same name: now resting up, in the museum--has unconfirmed date with the soldering iron.

always could amaze my friends by lifting the keyboard up and switching the CD for the floppy.
the way up and the way down are the same (heraclitus)

Wow, talk about bringing a thread back from the dead...

My first TP is still listed in my .sig, a 600E. Purchased from a New York lawyer who apparently operates an IBM refurbishing/reselling operation (www.betros.com) back around '01-'02, it worked perfectly for several years. Now has problems I've described elsewhere (delayed backlight turn on and dead column of pixels) but still in good shape. In fact, I've just recently picked up two other 600Es off of eBay to be used as transplant subjects and memory testbeds when I have some spare time.

It was purchased for use with my younger daughter's Lego Robotics team. Programming of the Lego RCX module was done with an infrared transceiver via the laptop's serial port. Neat little Windows program which enabled programming of the robot's control module using a "building block" approach. After that, the 600E was given to my older daughter for her school work. When the backlight issue popped up it was replaced with one of the 600X systems you also see in my .sig.

I haven't looked at your signature in a while. Wow, you are up to 12 T23's now! When are you going to start selling them? Another question is, have you owned any Thinkpads other than 600E, 600X and T23?

I cannot believe that I haven't posted in this thread....

My first Thinkpad, was actually a multiple purchase. In late 2001/2002, I picked up 4 used 600/600Es from a liquidation sale in Chicago...something similar to the liquidation of Arthur Anderson.

I also picked up a bunch of spare batteries, ac adapters, CD drives, and other misc. computer equipment.

Gee, you have probably sold even more 600/600E's than this guy!

I didn't trick anyone like that, but I was selling them for $400-450 locally a year and a half ago...with a 40GB HD, 288MB ram, and a DVD/CDRW.

Look up "Slim IBM ThinkPad BLOWOUT" on eBay's Completed Auctions page. This infamous gobengeo guy sold 24 of them in the last two weeks!

Eh, it was ok. Working on the T23s for that price now...but no one seems to be looking for a laptop locally now...especially since new laptops are now available for just a little more. I guess some can't appreciate a sound piece of equipment.

My first Thinkpad was a 770 variant. P233MMX and I maxed the RAM. I sold that and a Compaq 4131t on e-bay and picked up a T23 about a year after that. Later I 'switched' to OS 9 / X for a few years. Then came back to Windows (still have my PBG4) and picked up the T41p I am typing this on now. This T41 is perfect. It's run everything I asked, gathered lot's of good comments, and looks great. I can really see myself holding on to this laptop for years to come. It runs XP Pro great, Vista beta 2 runs smooth and Linux is butter. This machine has everything I could ask for.
New:
Thinkpad T430s 8GB DDR3, 1600x900, 128GB + 250GB SSD's, etc.

ThinkPad Tablet 16GB 1838-22U

Interesting Steve.... :? If it was Earnst & Young (consulting) instead of Arthur Anderson, you might have picked up my wife's 600e! We were in Chicago from '99-01. She was laid off in the big Tech downturn by the end of our first year there. She was issued a 600e at that time. I was using one too, but was in the process of upgrading to the T20 as it came out, then to the X20 while I was working IT for the University of Illinois @ Chicago.

My first laptop back in 1993 was Texas Instruments (nowadays Acer if Im not mistaken) Travelmate 2000, 286 CPU, 640k RAM (max 3MB), 40MB HDD, B/W LCD (not active one), MS DOS + Windows 3.0... no builtin FDD no ethernet no PCMCIA, so LapLink (parallel) cable was accessory to connect thing to desktop systems via LapLink software necessary as much as battery charger. Nevertheless it was cool little machine. Had it till 1997.

First thinkpad, hard to say, since 1998 used bunch of company machines, however first personal one was A31p which triggered my attention being marketed as first mobile workstation... and IT IS... I maxed it out and certainly will not sell it ever.... downside is size and weight of this desk queen, but for that I got X31 which is great fun to carry around, and nevertheless great little performer with 1,6 P M and 7k100 HDD... also maxed (well, almost)...

Next one, either second hand top spec T42p (15" IPS) or new T60p (15" IPS again). May also go for X41T, just for fun.

What I would really like to see from Lenovo is A61p, read contemporary A31p with dual/multi core CPU, firewire 800, USB 2.0, three spindle system etc... or ultimate media workstation again... heck, good 'ol A31p with 2,5GHz CPU is still powerhouse for kind of stuff and flexibility what I need.

hey Pianowizard

Briefly:

A31p 2653 N4G (maxed out)

2,5GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, 7k100 HDD (Sys), 60GB HDD Ultrabay 2k(Data), NEC ND-6750 D/L DVD-RW, Gigabyte Super G WiFi (108MBs) mini PCI, BT (BMDC200b), IBM USB 2.0 Cardbus, Ultra Port Camera II, and rest is standard N4G specification. Two Docks and bunch of small accessories, IBM Travel Mouse etc... Great system, wishing really to see someday A61p.

BTW, next upgrade may be 7k200 instead of original 60GB drive in UB2k.

heh, indeed it is... still beside these seven orbital A31ps in International Space Station think that forum member A31p Guy is having even bigger animal on earth... 3x7k100 HDDs sometime two years ago, but not with working BT IIRC. :P, while BT may be not big deal I really enjoy Skypeing with my SonyEricsson HBH-300 headsets, two of them, for same reason added BMDC200b CDC to my X31 as well.

My maxed out A31P in a Dock II is the server for my home FIOS based network.

2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 3 X 7K100 Hitachi, 500GB WD external HD connected via PC card to USB2.0 adapter, Atheros a/b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, internal DVD Multiburner, Millennium P650 Low-profile PCI video card with two 20" LCDs for my AutoCAD work.

Once a week it's undocked and taken to class.

James
James,

Great, this puts A31p Guy's A31p in second league , just kidding, really great setup. Well, I have Sapphire 9250 PCI in Docks (well, considering move to Dock II), connected on two 21" Sony Trinitrons. Doing mostly realtime 3D (VRML/X3D), and video stuff. Every now and then *desk queen* travels in IBM backpack or if/when situation *requires* more fancy apparence in black leather IBM bag. 8)

Have Matrox G450 PCI as second head gfx adapter in my 'ol SGI 320 PC, but that's not exactly 3D/Open GL card, othervise is nice and I can run up to three displays + TV monitor, or two displays + two TV monitors, out of that box... neat old monster.

PS. And yes, Im even not counting external storage connected on A31p, 640GB Firewire RAID 0 and 400GB NAS drive. And yes there's still bunch of old SGI workstations / servers all around my place shared via NFS.

My first lap' was one Toshiba Satellite 320CDS (Pentium MMX 233) in 1999 - heavy as a brick. Next year got my first Thinkpad: 570e (PentiumIII 500) - one of the best laptops ever made, since it's thin and light. Sadlly, last year vga of his mobo died and had to downgrade it to 570 motherboard (PentiumII 366).

Two years ago got at eBay auctions my actual Thinkpad T-23 and one Toshiba Portege 7020CT (PentiuII 366).
TP 570E & T-23 ex-owner.
Now looking for a T61

I got my 1st ThinkPad, a T60 while at school this past summer. I waited about two weeks for it to be delivered. Now I am onto an X60s, both awesome machines.

I have yet to attend any class this year without my ThinkPad.
ThinkPad user and ThinkPads.com member since summer, 2006. That was a good summer.

I received my first TP last night. Its a X31 (2672-58U) for free. It came with two X3 bases with 2 DVD CD-RW and two disket drives.
it has 768 ram and I am going to bring it up to 1.5 gig and add a wirless card.
It also came with Office 2003 pro.
I was going to drop $1100 on a brand spanking new computer but this will do me just fine :)

I am going to use her to finish school and thats about it.

It was a gift.
It had been my Father-in-law's work computer and he has since retired.

I have too much honor and respect for myself and other people's property to lower myself to do that.
