IBM ThinkPad R40 Windows XP Professional loading problem
I have a IBM ThinkPad R40 and it has no CD-ROM Drive yet. I used my IBM ThinkPad i1200 to install Windows XP Professional on the new Western digital 120GB Hard Drive. After The install completed, I removed the Hard Drive from the i1200 and into the R40. I booted the R40 and shows the IBM ThinkPad logo and then loads to a black page with the white beebing line at the top left corner and thats all it does. Hard Drive green light is not on. Comes on during power on and then turns off when reaches the black screen, Hard Drive still running. No Windows XP load screen logo.

Re: IBM ThinkPad R40 Windows XP Professional loading problem
Wrong forum.
Check that your BIOS/ECP is at the latest update.
Maybe your R40 doesn't like HDs that big?
Is the HD put in properly with a caddy, pins lined up and pushed in all the way?
Perhaps you put it in upside down?

Re: IBM ThinkPad R40 Windows XP Professional loading problem
I don't know, The R40 is way newer than the i1200, The i1200 is a 2000 and my R40 dates as a 2004 and has everything about lenovo and 2006 bios page. The Hard Drive reads. I checked under bios and it says WD 120GB HDD, So the R40 is reading it. unless the i1200 makes something that it only reads in the i1200. and the i Series was made by Acer so that could be another reason. So may have to find a CD/RW/DVD-ROM Drive for it soon.
I did Hard Drive swaping before with a ThinkPad 560 and used my T20 to install the Windows. but those two were made by actual IBM.

R40 will not read a hard disk with OS from an I series ThinkPad...and it will work with a 120GB drive...
Buy a media drive for $10-15 and start from scratch.
BTW, both of these were made by Acer...
Good luck.

Re: IBM ThinkPad R40 Windows XP Professional loading problem
I've had that happen before while swapping drives too. I don't know the cause or solution though. What I've found to be the best way (for me anyway) of installing an OS without a CD is to format the HDD in another machine, copy the installation files over, and then run the install on the new machine.ThinkPad560X wrote: Comes on during power on and then turns off when reaches the black screen, Hard Drive still running. It's not mentioned if you don't have one yet or if the bay is faulty, but to save time and mostly headaches. I would just buy a cd-rom or cd-r/rw, one can be had for $15-17 shipped on fleabay. The recovery disks can be had here pretty cheap also (marketplace).
