Upgrading USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 in a T23

#1 Post by DavidNY » Fri Jan 28, 2005 9:51 pm

Hello,

I'm interested in upgrading the USB 1.1 ports in my T23 for shiny new 2.0 ones.

Has anyone made this upgrade?

I've tried using a USB 2.0 PC card to do the job, but for some reason the machine only sees it as 1.1. I've fiddled with the drivers to no avail.

Thanks for any knowledge you can share.

It's not possible to upgrade the onboard USB ports from 1.1 to 2.0.

What make of USB card have you tried? I've several here that work just fine in everything from a 600E to a T23.

It has an NEC chipset, other than that there's no brand on it.

One question that hasn't been asked. What O.S. are you using?

There are actually two kinds of USB PCMCIA cards. One kind has a separate power adapter for supplying power which is the kind you need if you are using devices such as an iPod mini. Belkin makes an inexpensive model that is actually recommended by Apple.

I don't need power to my devices (printer, dvd burner, palm PDA) so that is not a requirement. I have a music keyboard that requires power, I've used it with the onboard USB ports and it works well.

Someone on this forum commented on an incompatibility between Intel (? was it?) chips and many USB cards that prevents them from working at 2.0. I'm having problems with my internal USB, so I just went to tigerdirect.com last week and bought a pc-card that had 4 USBs on it, and that one did work with my T41 just fine--maybe the card's good, or maybe my computer doesn't have the incompatibility problem.

Looking now, I see it's unbranded on the outside. It has 4 USB connections (the stick-out part is pretty big), and one place to plug in a power supply, if needed. They also provided (not mentioned in the catalogue description) a jumper for bringing power over from the computer's own USB connection to the card, which is curious, but a nice touch. Their description of it is Diablo 4 Port USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card (D15-1005), and it costs $35. Their online catalogue isn't very good: if you try to find it there, it doesn't show up in all the spots it should.

I spent $20 on this card, I want to make sure the next one I get has been checked out if in fact its an incompatibility issue.

For what it's worth, I recently installed the Belkin USB 2.0 Notebook card in my T30. It works fine with both the Microsoft generic drivers and the Belkin supplied driver. I'm running Windows 2000 SP4 plus reach ahead service.

Specifications of the card can be found here,

So NEC chips are incompatible? That seems odd.

I've used the Microsoft generic drivers for it, for some reason Windows has a fit if I try to use the OEM drivers, maybe it has something to do with the existing USB ports, I don't know.

That $65 Belkin card seems a bit pricey. Are there any other brands known to work?

By the way, with the card I got from tigerdirect.com I did not install the drivers that came with the card, as the directions said to do. I put in the card, XP did its thing, and the card worked, so I left it alone. Why mess with success?

Thanks James, I'm going to futz with it a bit more, but if I can't get it going then I will go shopping. Have you checked out this particular card for compatibility?

Here's the one I have: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 14503&rd=1

Thankfully I didn't pay Belkin's list price :D (even in Sterling terms).

David, that's got the same (lavendar triangle on black) no-manufacturer label as my 4-port one that works, but the plastic is a bit different. Device manager identifies mine as NEC.

NEC chips are absolutely fine for the USB 2.0, there were only Microsoft problems in their first few XP versions. They had a few bugs, therefore some companies sold the USB 2.0 cards with their own drivers (mainly ORANGE drivers), which were not stable.

Go to Microsoft homepage and read the chapter about SP2 and USB2.0 support, make the hotfix and your NEC card works perfect.

SP2 and all hotfixes (the USB2 is usually a manual install!!) will work fine.
I have been using NEC chipsets for 2 years without problem.

Just recently i saw a cheap NEC card that wouldn't work- bad card.

We threw in a cheap Zonet ZUN2200 card w/ no issues.
