FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
Does the FireGL T2 run hotter than the Mobility 9600 under normal, everyday usage, or only when running the type of apps that the Mobility 9600 probably couldn't handle, anyway?

It does run hotter even when not pressed hard.

Re: FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
That is my experience, as well. The T4xp GPU's tend to get and then run hot quickly. The 9600 GPU, which is a fine performer, doesn't seem to exhibit the same characteristics - at least that is what my lap tells me!ajkula66 wrote:It does run hotter even when not pressed hard.

Re: FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
Having owned every T4x model imaginable, I'd say that although my overall preference is towards T43, I find the ATi 9600 is the best pound-per-pound GPU of them all...

My main computer is a T42p 15 inch with FireGL T2. While working on most items, my computer is running in the low 40 deg's. Of course it is set to "Adaptive" in the Power Manager so mostly running at 600Mhz.

AFAIK, the T2 and 9600 share the same core. The T2 only differs from 9600 in the OpenGL supported driver (i.e. software) and working frequency. If you lower the frequency of T2 to the 9600 level than, IMO, there are no difference in power consumption between them.

Re: FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
Follow up;
1) I was referring to 14" units, which generally run hotter due to less internal breathing room. Maybe there is less difference with 15" units, I have much less experience with 15" T4xp's. I've had several 15" T42's with 9600's and they seem fine - fast and cool.
2) From my non-scientific experience, which is actually using many laptops, 14" T41p and T42p (and T43p's, for that matter) laptops get very hot on the bottom and the fans run more often than 14" T42's with the ATI 9600 GPU. I can not state in degrees what the difference is, but in my experience, it is noticeable. All of my laptops are set to adaptive, but even some web sites cause the CPU and GPU to spool up.
Your results may vary!

Re: FireGL T2 vs Mobility 9600: Heat
FireGL T2 and Radeon 9600 are identical.
The FireGL has a different signature that allows ATI OpenGL Software to run.
Because that OpenGL software has to be certified for CAD applications and that certification is very time consuming and painful, the FireGL are way more expensive.
Any ATI software can run the FireGL as a Radeon 9600.

The core is the same, but:Binh wrote:AFAIK, the T2 and 9600 share the same core. The T2 only differs from 9600 in the OpenGL supported driver (i.e. software) and working frequency. The FireGL T2s on the T41p/T42p units is equipped with 128MB of RAM, compared to 64MB on the 9600.
RAM tends to consume power and get hot. I am sure the extra 64MB plays a more significant role than a few extra MHz in core frequency.
