after upgrade my A20m is still slow

#1 Post by FrankieV » Fri Apr 17, 2009 11:16 am

I have a A20m and recently upgraded it from a 12g to a 60g hard drive, and I also increased RAM from 192Mb to 512 Mb; I got both from my old T20......however its noticeably slower than before the upgrades.......any ideas why?

thanks

Do you mean the A22M is slower than the T20 was when that same hardware was in it? In my experience more RAM won't speed up applications loading from a sluggish HDD. A fast (not necessarily larger) HDD makes the most difference to me in the snappy feel of speed.

Slow in what way? How are you measuring it's speed?

by response time of when I click on an app, for ex, when I click on My Computer, it is noticeably slower just to open than when it was before I upgraded

OK. That's what I'm talking about too. BTW, what OS are we talking about here? And, did you format this larger drive and reinstall the OS? Or did you clone your 12gig drive to the bigger one?

OS is XP Pro......I didn't do anything on the HD, I just removed it from the T-20, and put it in the A20m......it was working fine in the T-20, but the screen went out....I did a Checkdisk and Defraged it.......just to note - the battery is dead, in other words the light keeps blinking and if I unplug the AC, it goes dead immediately....also, I get an error: Warning: Hardware.ID missing - it seems thats regarding my Linksys but thought I should mention it

OK. Most likely this is not a hardware problem per se.
Here are some possible causes but not all, for software related problems. Any of these could slow your system down.

1. Hard drive fragmented
2. outdated device drivers
3. Windows not updated
4. Excessive junk files, cookies, temporary files, installation files etc...
5. Virus, malware ,spyware infection
6. Missing Operating System files or damaged/corrupt system files
7. Corrupt device driver/s
8. Wrong device driver installed.
9. Wrong settings in CMOS
10. software program causing problems
11. Bad Windows installation

It always best to do a clean install when moving a drive from one computer to another, unless they are identical. Same motherboard BIOS, etc. You might try running CCleaner, defrag, update all drivers, update Windows, turn off XP services that you don't need, etc. and get some improvement, but...YMMV.

After doing a little further investigating, I see that there are significant differences between the hardware (most notably the graphics chip) in a T20 and a A20M. Missing device drivers and possibly wrong system resource drivers, are almost certainly what's causing your problems.
