Simple question...Big problem

#1 Post by teather » Sat Apr 18, 2009 12:13 pm

:| I inherited an X40 with DOS, YES DOS. No XP install disk.
After some struggles, I loaded installed XP from a disk I had for a machine I abandoned last year.
XP works fine except no drivers (ethernet, wireless, modem etc.) were installed, which are probably on an original XP install disk for the X40, which I don't have.
Searching through the driver download site is a nightmare for all the drivers.
Does anyone know where I can buy, beg, borrow or steal an X40 install disk for Windows XP?
Help is appreciated. :|

You could always just download drivers using the list. Makes it very easy.

Check eBay, a vendor in Australia sold me a full set of recovery discs for about 1/2 what IBM wanted to charge me. Once you've wiped back to the "factory install," you can make your own recovery discs (MUCH easier recovering from a CD-R and a DVD-R than from 6-8 CD-Rs) and sell the OEM set (which I plan to).

:D Thank you folks.
I finally got the correct drivers...there are several wireless drivers and ethernet drivers on the download site.
I loaded every conceivable driver for the devices I needed and finally got the right ones.
All is OK now.
Thank you :D

Usually downloading the "last supported" from the site is solid, but when I did this for an X32 with a plain-Jane install of XP on it, the Wifi card kept losing connection with my 802.11g router, and wouldn't reconnect. Wiped to the factory install before ordering a new (different model) of card, and it's steady-Eddy now. So having those recovery discs handy doesn't hurt.

In my case, I wiped to the install image, then updated to the last versions IBM supported for the X32. Seems to work fine.
