It's Freezing Over Here

#1 Post by AlphaKilo470 » Sat Jan 29, 2005 11:28 am

Down here in the suburbs of Atlanta, it's been sleeting since 3:00pm yesterday. I've taken a few pictures and posted since I have nothing better to do.

Image
This is the stairway going from my back deck to the yard and driveway. Each step is coated in an inch thick layer of ice.

Image
My backyard. That's not snow, that's thick layers of ice, and where can still see grass is light layers of ice.

Image
My driveway, which won't be driven on anytime this weekend, it's coated in an inch thick layer of ice.

Image
This is the creek that goes through my backyard. Again, that's not snow, that's ice.

Alpha...you're in Atlanta, huh? Ever get up to East Tenn? I work half way between Knoxville and Chattanooga. Ever get up this way, stop in to see me at my school.

By the way, would love to have a ThinkPad owner's get-together somewhere in the S.E. U.S. this summer....any one else interested? We could bring out Laptops, have pot-luck picnic somewhere and spend a day at it...could even rent a conference room at a hotel and have sessions on different areas of Thinkpad interestes/problems/resolutions. Could also bring our "old" goodies and set-up a "for sale" table.

By the way, it's the same icy situation here today. Lucky for us, no power-outages yet (very typical around here with this type of weather...even if it is TVA country). If the power goes out, don't know what I'll do because I have Cable Internet, and my cable modem won't work, even if I were running on battery...well, then again, I could hook up my cell phone to my Thinkpad...LOL

I'm all for that, maybe if we could get some other people interested, we could decide where to have the meeting.

It's all a question of perspective. On (rare) occassion, I have had snow halfway up the first story of a house. A foot and a half is a lot here. Six - eight inches is common in the winter. I have a foot of snow in the front yard right now. I don't have winter genes, either :) ... JD Hurst

Things are better down here than earlier today. The photos really don't show much. To keep simple, I slipped when walking on the grass. As for my yard, that's not snow, that's smooth ice, and where you see the grass, that's where the ice is thin enough to be transparent. Mere inconvenience to some of you northerners, but to Georgia, where wintertime generaly does not even have snow, this is a pretty big thing. Had this happened during the week, the entire city would be pretty much disabled.

I'm told this is common where I am now:

Well it's not technically "freezing" here, but I'm freaking cold. Why must every building in this school be so cold? No matter where I go there's an AC vent waiting on me :(

Right now, it's burning up inside this school I'm at, but feels great outside, it's a nice 59 degrees outside.

I actually wouldn't mind that icy weather I took photos of except the ice didn't start falling until afternoon on a Friday and everything melted by Monday morning. I lost my weekend but got to go to school Monday. What the f**k. Why can't this stuff ever happen on a Monday or a Thursday?
