Need help with a T61 repair - Orange Juice spill on keyboard

#1 Post by sonuj2 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 7:38 pm

Hi Guys - I was pointed to this forum by someone who is a member here and has recd. good advice in the past. My daughter accidentally spilled a little bit of OJ on the keypad and when this happened she turned the laptop off, wiped off the liquid and then turned it back on. It started fine but when she tried to fire it again the next day it just would not start. I called Lenovo who told me spills are not covered under the normal warranty and they would charge me $950 before they send me a box to ship it in to them. Another tech rep at Lenovo suggested that the MB is toast and that I would need a new MB Intel GM965 with AMT (Part # 42W7875) for which Lenovo wants $351.

What is my best option at this point? Is there any way to salvage this machine? Do you have any suggestions on who I can approach for getting this fixed for a reasonable price? I live in Chicago, IL just in case you know someone in or closer to where I live.

Thanks,

SJ

A simmilar thing happened to my toshiba, I threw up on it, and after I dissasembled it and washed everything off, it worked fine, next day, no go. a week later, working fine, and it has now been working for 2 months non-stop. I would open it up and see if there is any ovbious stains on the motherboard, try using a little bit of distilled water to wash it off, then leave it until it is totally dry (couple of days). Good luck

I am currently looking at videos of how to dissemble the T61. Once I get a fair amt. of confidence I will go for it. Thanks.

Download the corresponding (14", 15", etc.) Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) from here: http://tinyurl.com/chjh4o
It is fully illustrated with info to take your T61 apart.

Thanks for the link. I can now have the manual open on my bigger desktop monitor while I try to get at the innards of the T61.

the most critical time is first 3-5 days with the liquid inside, after that you\'ll surely have non-repairable motherboard. At first, remove the battery and AC power, ASAP. The CMOS battery is less important, but remove it too.

After dissasembling, wash the motherboard with clean water, distilled is better. Don\'t forget other dirty parts like keyboard.
Everything must be completely dry before assembling - just leave it about 2-3 days.
