T4x Radeon to FireGL softmod - possible?

It seems that the Radeon 9000 and 9600 in the t4x series can be software "fooled" to function like their FireGL equivalents from the t4xp line.. I wonder if the mod actually works in our machines and whether it gives any performance increase, anywhere.

I have a muted feeling that it should work, after all.. but probably not worth the time involved..
