Exactly how much does the battery stick out? What is the average running time on that battery?

You must be talking about the 12 Cell Battery. It sticks out little more than an inch. Battery life would be about 4 hrs and 30 mins I guess. Atleast that how long I am getting it.

It is actually a 9-cell battery (72 Watt Hours capacity). How long it will last depends on the power consumption of your system.

For example, my T40 uses about 13 Watts with screen brightness at half and WiFi enabled and moderate activity (Word processing, Internet). 72 Watt Hrs / 13 Watts = about 5.5 hours use. If you are running at full screen brightness and doing more intensive work the battery will be used up faster.

For the 6-cell I would say that 3.5-4 hours is realistic working time if you are using WiFi and the screen at a decent brightness setting. I got 5.5 hours with the screen turned all the way down, WiFi off, and using only Microsoft word.

You could take the physical dimensions of the high capacity battery and subtract the dimensions of the standard battery. Then you would know exactly how much it sticks out.

According to the measurements, the battery sticks out quite a bit

The 9 cell battery sticks out less than an inch, .9" to be precise.
