R32 vs R40 (is it worth it)

#1 Post by carlisle_united » Tue Apr 21, 2009 6:24 am

Hi everyone.
First post from me.

I currently own a R32 but is about to buy a used repair object R40.
How much better is the R40 vs the R32?
I will probably have to use parts from the R32 to get the R40 to work. (parts like cdrom, battery, memory hatch)
Is it worth it?

My R32 is an 1,7 ghz P4m and the R40 is (as far as I can see) an 1,6ghz Celeron or a 1,6ghz Pentium M.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum!

R40s are generally more stable machines than R32s. Good luck with your upgrade.

Hi thanks for the reply

Unfortently I didn't get the R40 so I'm currently biding on a T40.

Im pretty new to the thinkpad world since I'm really an Mac guy, but I'm strangly drawn to the Thinkpads and I'm currently on the hunt for something a
little more powerfull than my R32.

Honestly, you should stay away from a T40/41/42/p unless you're getting it from a well-known source. These machines can be loaded with issues...

Good luck.

A 14" LCD R51 with an Intel GPU is a great option. It's a modern computer with the same footprint as a 14" R30/R31/R32/R40. It does not suffer from possible loose GPU issue that T40/T41/T42's do.

(Pretty much any Pentium M or newer ThinkPad wil be a noticeable step up.)

The main draw back from the R32 to the R40 is the 1.1 USB ports. You can swap many parts between them both including memory and battery.

Oooooh loose GPU dosent sound so good...
I'm guessing that thats the issue with the T40 I'm biding on. crap...

Now I'm starting to hope that I will loose the auction.

Hum... then I will start the hunt for a R51 or R52.
