Basic questions before doing my XP Pro clean install?

#1 Post by marlinspike » Thu Apr 23, 2009 4:58 pm

My new hard drive will arrive tomorrow, and after 2 years with Vista Business I plan to go back to XP Pro using the recovery disks. Anything I need to know/do? Running recovery disks I can do, I'm wondering if there is anything like cluster size I need to play with to get optimal performance.
Should I make a partition? If so, any recommnedations/walkthrough on this?

Just use the disks. Boot up the first disk into Rescue and Recovery, and choose to Restore Factory Contents. Follow the prompts. Eventually it will tell you to remove any CDs or DVDs and reboot. You will end up in Rescue and Recovery again. Choose to Restore Factory Contents again. You will go through several reboots, then it will be done.

If you want to add any partitions to your hard drive, do this after all the above is done using a non-destructive partitioning tool such as Partition Magic (there are others).

Another dumb question. I make my backups to a HD I put in my ultra-bay when I need it. I imagine using the recovery disks on my new HD will automatically put the rescue & recovery partition on my HD? If so, how do I get rid of that? It's been a while.

Yes, you will get the R&R partition. I'll let someone else answer how to get rid of it. I wouldn't want to give you the wrong advice. I never wanted to get rid of it myself.

Probably the easiest way to get rid of the R&R partition and to reclaim the space for XP is to delete and reallocate the partition/space with Gparted. Burn the Gparted .iso to a CD as an image.

Two things:

The hardware wifi switch doesn't do anything when using my hard drive with the XP Pro clean install on it. How do I fix this? I'm guessing it's some software that I'm missing (oh, if only there were still Thinkvantage System Update).

I can't get Client Security Solutions going on this hard drive because I apparently don't remember my TPM password. How do I fix this (is there maybe a way to pull it off of my Vista hard drive?)?

For XP, I believe you need the ACPI Power Management driver, the Hotkey utility driver, and the appropriate WLAN driver for your system.

Looks like with XP you need to have Access Connections installed. A minor inconvenience given how much better performance I'm getting on XP than I was on Vista and how much less ram is being used in the background.

Well, you don't have to have Access Connections installed in Vista to be able to use Fn+F5 to turn the Wireless and Bluetooth adapter on and off. I didn't think you needed it in XP either. I have not tried it in XP, but IIRC others have. It's been awhile since I looked into these issues. You might try what Riddil suggests in this post to see if it makes a difference with Fn+F5. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 87#p160087
