What if Lenovo was to make a ThinkPad branded netbook?
Re: Thinkpad netbook
Nice! You could add CD/DVD drive in the ultrabay

Oh wow, that's really cool! You've got some graphic skills!
I'd buy one.

And the more I look at it - a S30 re-imagined for 2009 would be awesome.

It has a 7 row keyboard, full enter key, shift and page forward/back, trackpoint, Lovely!

Re: Thinkpad netbook
Haha, clever. But the edges would be less roundy and I know they'd omit the trackpad. Still funny though.
The "Thinknet" would probably be very business-like even in its classy fun package.

Re: Thinkpad netbook
The first one looks somewhat Sony-Vaio-like
I´d prefer the metal hinges. I like the idea with the new keyboard and the full-size enter key, the red stripes and the gray keys very much. But the edges look somewhat disturbing, I have the feeling that some part of that could be physically removed if one is unlucky, which would be very sad for this little ThinkPad. But Great pics!

Re: Thinkpad netbook
Calling them netbooks is just a marketing strategy to sell cheaper underpowered laptops.
You are right that the omission of a trackpoint does take away from its class, but it's not a thinkpad. Compared to other trackpointless laptops, it's classy.

Re: Thinkpad netbook
x61 is way too ugly for consumers - comon the retro silver and clicky buttons feel like old 1988 tape recorder. x200(t) are both too expansive. for most people who only watch pictures, movies and browse some internet they don't need anything faster than pre 2002 era laptops. netbooks take adventage of that. for the first time companies realized that consumers don't need every computer to be "the most powerful."Marin85 wrote:But I don´t see a point in a 12'' netbook considering the existence of X200(t) and X6x model lines...
and adding a trackpoint would make a netbook useable for me.

Re: Thinkpad netbook
I doubt most "consumers" would want a TrackPoint or would even want to try one, especially if they're already comfortable with a touchpad, hence the current crop of IdeaPads. People like us, who insist on the TrackPoint, aren't "consumers" and consider traditional ThinkPad styling to be anything but "ugly."mattbiernat wrote:x61 is way too ugly for consumers... adding a trackpoint would make a netbook useable for me.

Yes, I don't see how anyone could think they are ugly.
Of course, my opinions often vary from the public's.
I think they are the most ingeniously-designed designs in all of computerdom.
And that a lot of modern gunk is ugly.

Well, since a non-ThinkPad is not allowed to have a trackpoint

So, if one of those is the S20... are the others ideapads too or thinkpads?

Yep, take the S30 case design, drop in the new NVidia Ion motherboard, 32GB SSD, lightened XP Pro, change the display backlight module to an LED driven one, swap the power plug to the new 20v one (so its compatible with my X60!) and I reckon it's there!

The game is on!

We knew NVIDIA was really pushing hard for its Ion platform. Earlier we'd heard rumors that Apple might be the first one to adopt NVIDIA Ion platform, but as per latest report Lenovo might well be the first one to use the Ion platform for its netbooks. According to Chinese-language Commercial Times, Lenovo plans to launch 11.6-inch and 12.1-inch netbooks combining Intel's Atom processor and Nvidia's Ion platform in the second quarter of this year. No word on whether the 12" Ion model will be Lenovo S20 or not. That's not all, Lenovo is also evaluating the possibility of launching a 13-inch Ion model.
So, might be another Lenovo Netbook, but might just be that Holy Grail - The Thinkpad Netbook!

sometimes I wish that I had a good deal more technical knowledge, and a whole bunch of equipment so that I could build buy an S30, build a new motherboard, battery, etc. for it, and have the most awesome computer ever. I suppose a ton of money would also be necessary for that.

Re: Thinkpad netbook
While I will be the first to admit I have a lot of loyalty to the ThinkPad brand, I will be the first to give Lenovo credit for creating a great netbook in the IdeaPad S10. Yes it lacks the trackpoint that I truly love, but other than that it's one heck of a mini notebook. The build quality is as good as any of my beloved ThinkPads, it's solid, has an amazing keyboard, and does what it's supposed to do with elan. I use it in the spirit of what netbooks are for, and find it fun, fast, light and ideal for staying connected.
Cheers....
